Trainer - School Bus Driver Trainer
Job Type : Full Time
Location : Lockport NY
Benefits :Trainers under direction by the local and regional Safety management, conducts and monitors location safety and training functions, conducts and monitors Classroom and BTW training, and ensures compliance with all company, State and Federal regulatory requirements.
Duties / Responsibilities :
- Conduct driver instruction and training, re-training and re-certifications.
- Responsible for reporting to the Instructor Coordinator scheduled classroom training.
- Responsible for reporting their training activities to the Safety and Training Supervisor as well as the Director of Safety and Training.
- Driver Trainers must attend all update meetings, and any other meeting designed to promote STA and / or keep their credentials current.
- Follow company policies regarding pupil / client management and relations with parents, teachers, guardians, medical practitioners, medical facilities, and the public in general.
- Reports to the Terminal Manager for daily duties.
- Work directly with the Safety and Training Supervisor to ensure that all drivers’ licensing and training is current.
- Assist the Safety and Training Supervisor with annual driver reviews.
- Keep records and submit reports as required.
- All other duties as assigned.
- State-Required Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and School Bus Endorsements
- Current report of Driver Physical Examination
- Demonstrated proficiency in the operation of assigned vehicles. May include extra equipment such as wheelchair lifts, and air brakes under all road and weather conditions.
- State-Required Commercial Drivers License with Passenger and School Bus Endorsements
- State specific requirements :
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle as evidenced by a good driving record
- Competent and knowledgeable in classroom and Behind-the-wheel training.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of Federal and State regulations.
- Ability to evaluate driver’s / trainee’s skills.
- Must be available to provide training in the evenings and on weekends as necessary to meet business needs.
- Conduct oneself professionally and in a manner to reflect positively on STA.
- Must be able to exercise extreme care in maintaining confidentiality and privacy.
- Ability to physically perform the essential functions of the job
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to heat, cold, wet and / or humid weather conditions
- The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud
- Attend work on a regular and dependable basis
- Ability to successfully pass state and / or federal required Background Checks
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job
- Ability to comply with all policies and procedures established by company
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be at least 21 years of age with at least 2 years of driving experience.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving history, CDL A or B with S, P and A endorsements
- Certificate of training in first aid and CPR, if required by local contract
- A first aid endorsement on the special driver’s certificate or a certificate of training in first aid and a certificate of training for CPR, if required by local contract
- At least 2 years of school bus driving experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 40-hour Instructor Certification and annual update.
- Successful completion of STA Driver Instructor Course and Exam.

Climbing-Frequently-Getting on and off the vehicle to assist challenged riders.
Walking-Occasionally-Pick up the vehicle in parking lots, walk in aisles on board bus, walk around vehicle for inspections.
Pushing / Pulling-Regularly-Closing door, pushing wheelchairs, opening emergency door and equipment opening and closing windows.
Reaching-Regularly-Opening and closing door as well as operating all hand and foot controls, checking bus fluids Secure themselves correctly in the factory-installed drivers seat belt unassisted.
Repetitive Motions-Frequently-Turning the steering wheel, shifting the transmission.
Sitting-Frequently-Driving a bus. Secure themselves correctly in the factory-installed drivers seat belt unassisted.
Talking-Regularly-Announcing streets, talking with passengers, or speaking on the radio.
Seeing-Frequently-Keeping aware of general traffic conditions, stopped vehicles, traffic signals, viewing color or traffic lights, inspecting vehicle, monitoring passengers.
Hearing-Frequently-Listening to traffic sounds, emergency vehicles, passenger inquiries, monitor radio, detect mechanical problems.
Stooping / Stretching-Occasionally-Picking up and securing young or challenged passengers, securing wheelchairs, inspecting under the bus.
Standing-Occasionally-Supervising passenger boarding and exiting, operating lift controls.
Lifting-Occasionally-Lifting challenged passengers into their seats, wheelchairs and other equipment; assisting passengers in an emergency to evacuate the bus, lifting hood to perform pre-trip inspection and installation of tire chains
Combination of Above-Rarely-Assist student in simulated and real emergency evacuation situations.
