Central Research Laboratories (CRL), the Remote Handling business within DESTACO is a key P&L serving the Life Sciences (pharmaceutical, radio-pharmaceutical and bio-containment) and Nuclear market segments. Our products are recognized in the marketplace under the CRL brand.

Position Summary

The Assembly Supervisor is responsible for leading the Assembly operations, directing and coordinating production activities to achieve plant goals related to safety, quality, productivity, cost and delivery in a low-volume, high mix plant. S/he will coordinate and implement systems, processes and policies for the assembly, plastics, and booting areas. S/he is responsible for developing and leading a team that meets or exceeds organization goals for customers including safe and effective production processes, on-time delivery, inventory management, and cost reduction initiatives.

The Assembly Supervisor reports to the Plant Manager and also works closely with the Machining Supervisor and other members of the operations team. This position is located in Red Wing, MN and requires some travel (up to 10%). This position requires the ability to work and communicate closely with plant teams and across regions with all levels of the organization, with customers and suppliers, and to work in teams worldwide. This position may require occasional weekend work to supervise critical jobs for select customers.

Reporting to the position is Assembly & Booting Team Members (approximately 12-15). This position works closely with the Materials, Scheduling/Planning, Manufacturing Engineering and Product Engineering teams to produce products that meet or exceed customer expectations.

Key Job Responsibilities Included But Not Limited To

  • Leads and promotes safety awareness with the assembly teams. Promotes accident prevention and employee involvement regarding a safe work environment. Trains employees on critical safety procedures for the assembly, plastics, and booting areas.
  • As a member of the leadership team, fosters a culture of transparency, disciplined high performance work teams. Strives to ensure the appropriate processes, team and tools are in place to support these cultural traits.
  • Leads and fosters continuous improvement and team member engagement. Utilizes Lean Manufacturing tools (Kaizen, 5S, 1 Piece Flow, etc.) to drive process improvements to eliminate waste.
  • Supervises team daily, while ensuring safety, quality and productivity requirements are met.
  • Interviews and develops the plant assembly team with support from the Human Resources department, following the recruitment and selection process for successful hiring.
  • Assists Scheduler with planning and reviewing assembly operations, establishing priorities and sequences for manufacturing products to maximize productivity and ensure on time delivery to our customers.
  • Develops Root Cause Corrective actions to anticipate or resolve production or quality problems consulting engineering, quality and manufacturing team to reduce cost of poor quality and prevent operational delays on an as needed basis.
  • Ensures effective data and reporting through Oracle and troubleshoots any issues or discrepancies.
  • Responsible for executing and completing daily work schedule and ensuring quality of production outputs.
  • Communicates daily with Plant Manager, escalating issues in the department as required to maintain production
  • Develops or revises standard work, operational and working practices to improve training.
  • Coaches, provides feedback to and develops team members. Motivates and leads the production team to achieve annual goals/objectives set at the individual and organizational level following the performance management process.
  • Develop training plans to train new employees, allow job rotation and reduce tribal knowledge.
  • Determine training requirements for each assembly area (i.e. Leak Test certification)
  • Develop improved storage and kitting processes for assembly component storage area
  • Conduct performance appraisals for hourly shift employees
  • Assists with selection and development of the team following the recruitment and selection process for successful hiring.

Job Requirements

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience in manufacturing required; low volume – high mix environment, and assembly or machining environment preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing techniques, and other continuous improvement practices (5S, Kaizen, etc.) are preferred
  • Experience with ERP system required (Oracle preferred).

Education And Certification Qualifications

  • Associate degree required, Bachelor’s degree preferred

Travel Requirements

  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time
