Job Description
NSC Skilled Trades is seeking experienced Mechanical Engineer II or III, Turbines.
To manage and supervise safely and effectively overhauls, mechanical maintenance repairs, and performance design changes for steam and gas turbines, major rotating equipment, and other equipment as assigned. Provide general mechanical engineering support for plant operations, maintenance, and planning staff. Function as a project engineer for plant improvement and capital projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- 2 3 years of experience in mechanical and power station engineering, turbine maintenance, overhaul supervision, and turbine inspection.
- Able to perform budgeting, writing work scopes and repair procedures, analyzing and evaluating turbine and rotating mechanical performance and problems, and demonstrate ability to apply expertise to the safe and effective management and direction of turbine overhauls and repairs.
- Effective project management skills.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Effective team leadership and participant skills.
- Competent office computer skills.
- Maintain working knowledge of applicable regulatory code standards and laws.
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience can be substituted for requirements listed above.
- HOURS: 8am - 5pm Monday - Friday or (4 - 10hr shifts)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Manage and supervise corrections to all turbine and rotating equipment problems.
- Provide mechanical and engineering expertise for design changes which improve heat rate and reduce operating and maintenance costs by understanding how to improve turbine performance and what causes degradation.
- Manage overhauls and mechanical maintenance for all the company's steam and gas turbines and major rotating equipment.
- Develop a cost-benefit analysis.
- Solicit and evaluate proposals.
- Provide contract and construction management.
- Provide technical design and review services.
- Provide misc. equipment and system engineering, troubleshooting, and documentation services.
- Provide engineering support to other staff engineers and other cooperative members as needed.
- Promote and maintain a team environment.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform preliminary surveys (studies).
- Develop estimate/budget packages for project approval.
- Develop project design and specification packages.
PRINCIPLE CHALLENGES:
- Effectively managing overhauls and repairs utilizing both contract personnel and in-house craft labor.
- Maintaining a high level of expertise on the variety of the company's steam and gas turbines and other equipment.
- Successfully managing work utilizing inter-departmental teams.
- Successfully handling multiple, simultaneous projects.
- Striving for continual improvement while adopting new approaches to business and customer service.
FUNCTIONAL GUIDANCE:
- Manager: provides general guidance relative to priorities and goals
- The management team provides guidance regarding long term goals and immediate needs
- The station and other cooperative employees provide guidance regarding specific needs on tasks and projects.
