Working independently as part of a small wage tax team, the Payroll Tax Manger is responsible for coordinating with external service providers and in-house resources to effectively, accurately, and timely manage the company's federal and state tax compliance matters and assist in payroll tax, international tax compliance, and tax projects as required.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with in-house resources and external service providers to plan and manage wage tax compliance processes to ensure accurate, timely filing of federal, state, and local income tax returns, and other business-related filings
- Drive tax compliance process improvements to minimize manual manipulation of data and maintain accuracy
- Monitor federal, state and local legislative and regulatory tax law developments and communicate the impact to the team
- Coordinate business tax registrations and de-registrations
o Legal – Sec. of State
o Corp Tax – St. income tax
o Payroll related tax – SUI; SIT; W2C
- Support the business by completion of exemption certificates, residency certificates and other routine forms and correspondence
- Monitor payment services for TPA and POA
- Address escalated agency notices, identify needed actions, and act upon them in a timely manner
- Register new state registrations
- Track and manage "applied for" status and pending state sets up
- Investigates and resolves tax notices, penalties, and questionnaire requests
- Ensure clients are registered and licensed in all states they operate and assist with those as needed
- Multi jurisdiction review to ensure correct tax profile reporting
- Find and implement opportunities for process improvement in company tax procedures
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Experience in Payroll Tax
- Proficient knowledge of US federal and state taxation required - experience with UpC structures preferred
- Experience in tax controversy at a state or federal level advantageous for this role
- Familiarity with financial and accounting systems preferred
- UKG Experience preferred, but not required
- Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and financial software
- Full understanding of form W2/W2C including calculation, scenarios and filing requirements
- Willingness and ability to perform tasks at all levels, from detailed preparation to high level review
