THE IDEAL CANDIDATE 
Public Works is looking to fill multiple full-time positions in our Road Maintenance Series. The ideal candidate should be willing to work outside in various weather conditions and be willing to do a variety of tasks and jobs as assigned by Supervisors and Senior Road Maintenance Workers.

THE POSITION 
ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER I 
The Road Maintenance Worker I is the entry level class in the Road Maintenance Worker series, learning work methods and techniques.  This class serves as the training level in which incumbents gain greater experience in operating construction equipment and demonstrating required competence for advancement to the journey level.  Incumbents may be assigned to perform road and/or bridge maintenance, traffic device repair and installation, tree trimming and weed control, and other related duties involving manual labor such as shoveling, pothole patching, lifting and loading.  This position is subject to overtime, standby and callback assignments.  
 
ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER II 
The Road Maintenance Worker II is the journey level class within the Road Maintenance Worker series.   Employees within this class re-distinguished from the Road Maintenance Worker I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, including the ability to work independently exercising judgement and initiative and the ability to operate the full range of tools and equipment related to specific assignments.  Incumbents may be assigned to perform road and/or bridge maintenance, traffic device repair and installation, tree trimming and weed control, and other related duties involving manual labor such as shoveling, pothole patching, lifting and loading.  This position is subject to overtime, standby and callback assignments.
 
ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER III
The Road Maintenance Worker III is the advanced working level in the Road Maintenance Worker class series. The Level III is skilled in operating advanced level, specialized heavy equipment such as truck/trailer units, large front-end loaders, high rangers, backhoes, road graders, striper/pavement marker and chipper on an on-going, continual basis and must demonstrate a sophisticated expertise in the use of such equipment. This individual is instrumental in training departmental employees and may be assigned to the road, tree, traffic, or bridge crew. This position is subject to overtime, standby, and callback assignments. Performs related duties as assigned.
 
Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the Crafts/Maintenance Institutional bargaining unit for labor relations purposes. 
  
Individuals who are in a full-time classification position are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months, for a total of eighteen months. 
 
Part-time extra-help is a provisional classification where permanent status may not be obtained. This position is subject to overtime, standby, shift, and callback assignments and will perform related duties as assigned. This position is non-benefited except for participation in a 401a program with Nationwide. 
 
Incumbents may also be subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday, and shift assignments as identified in their MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).

ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER I 
  • Operate a variety of light and heavy equipment, such as brooms, flatbed truck, forklift, trailers, traffic message board, tree-trimming and painting equipment;   
  • Operate a variety of small hand and power tools;  
  • Perform manual labor such as shoveling, loading, lifting, patching, painting, and other routine work;  
  • Direct traffic and establish work-zone traffic controls;  
  • Service tools and equipment as needed;  
  • Keep records on work performed;  
  • Patch, oil, and seal road surfaces; and  
  • Follow basic safety policies & procedures. 
ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER II 
Typical tasks of Road Maintenance Worker I, plus:
  • Train lower level road workers in the operation of equipment while at various job sites. 
ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER III 
Typical tasks of Road Maintenance Worker II, plus:
  • Act as a lead in the absence of a Senior Road Maintenance Worker;  
  • Identify equipment needs for assigned project; and  
  • Perform duties of a Road Maintenance Worker I and II when needed.
KNOWLEDGE
ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER I 
  • Motor vehicle laws relating to the equipment operation;  
  • Methods, procedures, materials and tools used in construction, maintenance and repair work;   
  • Methods used in operating dump trucks and truck/trailer combinations; and  
  • Basic math sufficient to keep time cards and service records. 
ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER II 
Demonstrated Knowledge of all Road Maintenance Worker I requirements, plus:
  • Motor vehicle laws relating to the equipment operation;  
  • Methods, procedures, materials and tools used in construction, maintenance and repair work;   
  • Methods used in operating dump trucks and truck/trailer combinations;  
  • Basic math sufficient to keep time cards and service records;  
  • Operating knowledge of all Road Maintenance Worker I level equipment; and  
  • Setting up a safe and effective work zone. 
ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER III 
Demonstrated knowledge of all Road Maintenance Worker I and II requirements, plus:
  • The use, servicing and maintenance of job-related equipment;  
  • Motor vehicle laws affecting equipment operation;  
  • General methods and techniques used in the construction and maintenance roads and bridges;   
  • Road drainage and basic principles of grading and elevation;  
  • Weed control;   
  • Tree trimming, painting, striping, and traffic control devices.  
  • Basic methods and safety techniques in working with electrical components, such as street lights and flashing warning beacons; and  
  • Safe and correct operation of heavy and light equipment. 
SKILLS/ABILITIES 
ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER I 
  • Operate a motor vehicle and various road maintenance equipment including flatbed truck, forklift, trailers, traffic message board, tree-trimming and painting equipment;  
  • Skillfully and safely operate a truck having standard transmission with skill and safety in accordance with traffic laws;  
  • Maintain a safe work environment for self, employees and the public;  
  • Understand and carry out verbal and written directions;  
  • Perform heavy manual work requiring good health, physical strength and agility; and   
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. 
ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER II 
Demonstrated ability with all Road Maintenance I requirements, plus:
  • Skillfully and safely operate a truck having compound transmission with skill and safety in accordance with traffic laws;  
  • Plan and set up a safe work zone, including traffic control;  
  • Proficient in the operation of entry level universal equipment as required of a Road Maintenance Worker I;  
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;  
  • Organize and prioritize work assignments; and
  • Maintain accurate records. 
ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER III 
Demonstrated ability of all Level I and II requirements, plus:
  • Proficient in the operation of journey level equipment;  
  • Repair and maintain pipes, bridges, roads, and traffic control devises;  
  • Operate all job-related equipment.  
  • Follow and give verbal and written directions;  
  • Maintain accurate written records and reports;  
  • Supervise and/or train special program referrals or new employees as required;  
  • Work cooperatively with others;  
  • Meet with the public and answer questions in a professional and courteous manner;  
  • Safely and correctly operate heavy and light equipment; and  
  • Operate class A vehicles.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE 
ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER I 
  • One (1) year full-time work experience as a maintenance or construction laborer or truck driver which includes work of the type done in Public Works related agencies; AND  
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license; AND  
  • Obtain and maintain a valid California Class A Commercial Vehicle Drivers License within one (1) year of date of appointment, including necessary endorsements as required by the State of California to perform the essential functions of the position.

ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER II 
  • One (1) year full-time work experience as a maintenance or construction laborer or truck driver which includes work of the type done in Public Works related agencies; AND   
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class A driver’s license; AND  
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license; AND  
  • Obtain necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California, to perform the essential job functions of the position within one (1) year of date of appointment; AND   
  • Proficiently operate Class A vehicles. 
ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER III 
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience as a Road Maintenance Worker II with Stanislaus County or equivalent; AND 
  • Proficiently operate the following equipment: aerial tower, back hoe, CNG roll-off truck and striper truck, grader, grinder, paver, spray truck operator, tanker, transports and vactor, within 12 months of appointment; AND
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class A Commercial Vehicle Drivers License; AND
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license; AND
  • Endorsements needed to operate all Road Division equipment, including but not limited to, doubles/triples, and tank. Additionally, operators transporting more than ten people must have the proper endorsement. 
Failure to maintain the above requirements and to successfully pass regular County-paid Department of Motor Vehicle required physicals could result in release from employment.
EXAMINATION PROCESS 
Most County recruitments consists of the steps detailed below and are governed by Merit Principles. The examination process ensures that all applicants are given the same opportunity to gain employment within Stanislaus County.
 
  • Application Review and Screening. Applications are carefully screened based on information provided. Those who submit incomplete applications that lack relevant qualifications or do not submit all required documents will not be invited to move on. 
  • Written Examination. Applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam that tests knowledge for the position.   
  • Oral Examination. Applicants are invited to a panel interview in which they will be evaluated by County subject matter experts.   
  • Eligible Lists. Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on an eligible list for that classification.  Eligible lists are effective for six months, but may be extended up to eighteen months.

Final appointment will be conditional upon successfully passing a County paid pre-employment drug screening (if applicable for position) and a job-related background investigation.
