DEFINITION
Under the supervision of the site administrator, and the direction of a fully credentialed special education teacher, to assist with instructional tasks, clerical record keeping, and child care duties, to severely handicapped pupils in a classroom; to monitor and report pupil progress regarding behavior and performance goals; to assist in the implementation of self-help, social and community skills; and to do other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Personnel in this job classification may perform any combination of the essential duties shown below. •Assist the teacher in the instruction of pupils with severe handicapping conditions and performs non-teaching tasks as required.
•Assist in classroom control by supervising small groups and/or individuals to promote the learning process, according to approved procedures.
•Assist the teacher in providing instruction in social, gross, and fine motor development, self-help skills.
•Assist pupils on and off the bus; push wheelchairs and lift pupils as needed.
•Operate and maintains various exercise, therapeutic, instructional, and office equipment, used in the classroom.
•Prepares materials for pupils’ use, as directed by the teacher.
•Perform a variety of clerical tasks as directed by the teacher; absence reports, lunch counts, enrollment records, correcting papers and workbooks, documenting pupil progress.
•Assist in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids for use with individuals, or small groups of pupils.
•Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating audio-visual equipment, operating educational training equipment, and distributing and collecting paper and supplies.
•Provide emotional and physical support to pupils; assist with feeding and toileting activities.
•Assure the health and safety of pupils by adhering to health and safety practices and procedures; maintain a clean and orderly classroom environment.
•Assist pupils in mainstreamed classes according to established procedures.
•Assist in supervision of play and related activities.
•Translate and serve as interpreter as assigned by the position in a designated second language; provide oral and written translations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Basic concepts of child growth and development, and developmental behavior characteristics;
Student behavior management strategies and techniques;
Appropriate English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar;
Basic mathematics concepts;
Routine record management, storage, and retrieval systems and procedures.
Ability to:
Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward pupils of varied age and ability levels;
Communicate effectively in oral and written form in English and a second language, as required by the assignment;
Perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office related machines and equipment;
Utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of a positive educational environment;
Restrain and discipline pupils according to approved policies and procedures;
Communicate effectively with physically and developmentally handicapped children;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with children and adults;
Operate various instructional, therapeutic, and office equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out the essential job functions.
•Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 60 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
•This type of work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve running, walking, or standing for brief periods.
•Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
HAZARDS
Contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals.
Exposure to bodily fluids and infectious disease.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to acquire the knowledge and skill would be:
Experience:
Responsible experience in a paid or volunteer capacity, working with children and/or individuals with disabilities.
Education:
Twelfth grade diploma or equivalent.*
Certificate of passing score on the instructional aide proficiency examination.**
*Candidates applying for positions at Title I funded schools must have an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree or the equivalent, or 48 college semester units, or otherwise meet the State and Federal qualifications of the No Child Left Behind guidelines.
**A valid California teaching credential or a passing score on the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST) may be accepted in lieu of the aide proficiency examination.
Conditions of Employment: Insurability by the District’s liability insurance carrier. Employment is contingent upon fingerprint and background clearance, and proof of a recent negative tuberculosis test result.
