The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2020/2021 academic year, we enrolled over 21,500 students in which 60% identify as Latinx, 12% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% as Black/African American, 18% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 4% as multiracial. Fresno City College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.

Reporting to the Dean, Student Services on the Fresno City College campus and/or at off-site community campus locations, the counselor will be responsible for:
  • Providing comprehensive counseling services, including personal, career and educational counseling to individuals and groups, and orientation and transfer counseling services;
  • Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
  • Planning and coordinating the maintenance of academic records for the California Community College Commission Athletic Association and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) concerns;
  • Providing support and coordinating academic related events for prospects during on-campus recruiting process;
  • Teaching counseling courses that focus on career, college success, and transfer;
  • Presenting and advising using multi-media instructional tools;
  • Assuming division liaison responsibilities concerning student athletes;
  • Developing, implementing and operating program orientation and workshops;
  • Conducting large group presentations;
  • Working with students and faculty members at the division level and with other counselors;
  • Providing comprehensive counseling services for students, including academic, career, personal counseling on an appointment and drop-in basis for individual and groups;
  • Assisting student athletes in clarifying their educational goals, selection of courses and developing Student Educational Plans (SEPs);
  • Collaborating with instructional and counseling faculty and staff from other departments and programs, including Financial Aid, Admissions and Records, EOPS/CARE, DSP&S, CalWORKs, Puente, IDILE, SYMBAA, USEAA, Veterans/International, TRiO Student Support Services, Athletics, and other special programs;
  • Participating in the implementation of guided pathways, student success teams and student equity initiatives;
  • Utilizing and keeping abreast of advanced counseling methods and student development theories that include integrating technology to support student learning and identification of career objectives;
  • Utilizing technology as it applies to data collection and analysis for student success;
  • Serving on, participating and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
  • Working assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed; and
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of faculty as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.



Minimum Qualifications:
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices; AND
  • Masters in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling;

    OR
  • A valid California Community College Credential;

    OR
  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional and relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including disabled students;
  • Experience in designing and preparing Student Education Plans (SEPs) for community college students;
  • Experience in evaluating external transcripts as they apply to athletic eligibility, degree attainment, and the transfer process;
  • Experience teaching courses in career and personal development;
  • Knowledge and utilization of instructional best practices for students in the classroom;
  • Knowledge of current transfer policies and admission requirements of California State Universities (CSUs) and Universities of California (UCs);
  • Creative marketing skills to enhance student use of athletic support services;
  • Knowledge of California Community Colleges matriculation processes;
  • Knowledge of transfer agreements between community colleges to meet NCAA transfer rules;
  • Ability to develop and maintain counseling notes in Colleague, SARS, or similar electronic recordkeeping software, in a timely and effective manner;
  • Experience working effectively with student success programs such as EOPS/CARE, DSP&S, CalWORKs, Puente, IDILE, SYMBAA, USEAA, Veterans/International, and TRiO Student Support Services;
  • Knowledge and experience interpreting and utilizing articulation agreements and transfer requirements for community college students;
  • Experience in using and interpreting a variety of career assessment tools;
  • Experience in developing and presenting counseling related workshops and orientation sessions;
  • Experience participating in outreach activities in the community and on campus;
  • Experience providing counseling and follow-up services to students on probation or academic dismissal status;
  • Demonstrated ability to connect students with on/off campus resources to assist them in their college life management;
  • Demonstrated ability to use a broad range of technology pertaining to data collection and analysis for student success;
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with faculty in academic divisions and engage in collegial dialogue on issues of student success and student success teams;
  • Knowledge of California Community Colleges guided pathways and student equity;
  • Experience working with a diverse student population;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and collegially with students, staff and colleagues;
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.






Conditions of Employment:
177-181 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:
Annual starting salary is $60,678 - $93,414 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,270 is available. Salary will be prorated to reflect total duty days assigned. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the "recommended candidates". These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews.

A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
