What You Will Be Doing:
The Emergency Management Specialist (EMS) 2 for the Disaster Assistance Section, Public Assistance Branch, will play a vital role in managing and executing disaster recovery programs for state and federally declared disasters, engaging in field operations, and supporting the State Emergency Operations Center. This position involves coordinating communication and assistance among local communities, agencies, and government entities during disasters, while also deploying to affected areas to ensure an effective response and bolster preparedness efforts in line with state and local disaster plans.

The mission of the Disaster Assistance (DA) Section is to coordinate state and federal actions with local jurisdictions to assist affected communities in responding to, recovering from, and mitigating against major disasters or emergencies declared by the Governor of Alaska or the President of the United States. Through the division’s Public Assistance (public infrastructure) and Individual Assistance (private/property/shelter) programs and activities, the DA Section works to provide supplemental assistance to affected areas and help them recover from a disaster as quickly as possible.

The successful applicants must pass a federal background check in order to qualify for military base access, which is required with this position's work location on base. The background check may include fingerprinting. All job offers are conditional pending successful completion of the federal background check and issuance of a Defense Biometrics Identification System (DBIDS) card allowing base access. Also, you must be able to maintain the clearance throughout your employment. If using a private vehicle this will require a valid Alaska Driver License, proof of vehicle insurance, and a valid State of Alaska vehicle registration.

Special Note: In addition, in some cases employees must be able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC). Minimum Qualifications
One year of entry professional level experience mitigating against, preparing for, responding to, or recovering from emergencies, disasters, or terrorist events. The required experience is met by service as an Emergency Management Specialist 1 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Two years of entry professional level experience either creating contingency plans, conducting exercises to evaluate plans and training, responding to events creating civil disruption or environmental disturbance, or coordinating the recovery from such events.
OR
A bachelor's degree, in any field, from an accredited college;
AND
One year of entry professional level experience either creating contingency plans, conducting exercises to evaluate plans and training, responding to events creating civil disruption or environmental disturbance, or coordinating the recovery from such events.
Special Note:
A valid Alaska driver's license is required.
Some positions require the incumbent to obtain a federal security clearance.
Work may require periodic, 24-hour on-call duty and travel to remote locations in small aircraft and boats, and may involve exposure to inherently hazardous or potentially dangerous environmental conditions.
