The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Data Modernization & Innovation Office, is seeking an innovative and forward-thinking individual to serve as the Head of Research and Innovation. In this pivotal role, you will help shape the future of Alaska’s transportation infrastructure, fostering cutting-edge research and innovative solutions to enhance safety, efficiency, and resilience across the state.

Depending on the selected applicant, this position can be filled in Juneau, Fairbanks, or Anchorage. Salary information is listed below: 

Engineer/Architect 2:

Juneau: $4,111.20 / Biweekly

Fairbanks: $4,032.80 / Biweekly

Anchorage: $3,915.20 / Biweekly

Engineer/Architect 3:

Juneau: $4,712.80 / Biweekly

Fairbanks: $4,622.40 / Biweekly

Anchorage: $4,488.00 / Biweekly

What you will be doing:  
  • Lead Research and Innovation Initiatives: Oversee research efforts and pilot programs aimed at improving the safety, sustainability, and functionality of Alaska’s transportation systems.
  • Shape the Future: Collaborate with department leadership to develop and implement strategic innovations that address the unique challenges of Alaska’s transportation infrastructure.
  • Foster Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams, external stakeholders, and industry experts to identify and execute innovative solutions.
  • Drive Data-Driven Decisions: Use cutting-edge research, data analysis, and technology to inform policy decisions and operational improvements.
  • Promote Safety and Efficiency: Design and implement programs that enhance safety and optimize performance across all modes of transportation.
  • Support Growth and Development: Mentor and support teams within the department, fostering a culture of curiosity, learning, and continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

Engineer/Architect 2
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect, and one year of professional experience as an Engineer/Architect 1 or Engineering Associate with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent.

Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

Engineer/Architect 3
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect, and three years of professional engineering or architectural experience (Engineer/Architect series), or the equivalent.

Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Additional Required Information

At time of interview, applicants are requested to submit (if not already attached to your application):

  • Copy of your Professional Engineering (P.E.) License Number (only if licensed outside the State of Alaska).
  • Three (3) professional references, including name, job title, and current phone numbers.  
  • Copy of Valid Drivers License

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Engineer/Architect 2 or Engineer/Architect 3 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
