Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex

State of Alaska
Anchorage, AK Full Time
POSTED ON 2/16/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 4/16/2025

ATTENTION ALASKA RESIDENTS!
The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Central Region Design & Support Services, is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Base Salary Information:
Engineering Assistant 1: $31.83 Hourly
Engineering Assistant 2: $36.68 Hourly
Engineering Assistant 3: $41.93 Hourly

What you will be doing:

In this role in Traffic Design, under senior engineers' guidance, you will research and apply design standards to create contract documents. Your responsibilities include designing traffic signals, lighting, signs and striping as well as developing horizontal and vertical alignments along with typical sections. You will also design open channel drainage and enclosed storm drain systems while conducting cost-effective analyses to improve project efficiency.

As you progress, you will develop traffic control plans, compute cost estimates, and draft special provisions. You will prepare technical reports such as Design Study Reports, field investigation reports, and traffic capacity analysis. Researching and applying standards, you will document the highway design process and support project decisions. Additionally, you will conduct field inspections and collaborate with other teams to resolve design challenges. This role provides hands-on experience and professional growth opportunities.

Our organization, mission, and culture:

The Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is mission-focused with an organizational atmosphere that promotes excellence, integrity, teamwork, and public service. Alaska has over 5,600 miles of paved and gravel highways and 239 airports; all of which are critical infrastructure for meeting basic transportation needs throughout the state. This infrastructure plays a vital role in supporting our economy and serving communities.

You will work directly on capital improvement projects in Central Region, collaborating with staff from multiple areas of expertise and assisting with public and agency meetings. Central Region includes the State’s most urban areas in Anchorage, the Kenai Peninsula, and the Mat-Su Valley as well as some of the most remote villages on the Kuskokwim Delta. This position is crucial in assisting the Department's mission to "Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure."

The benefits of joining our team:
This position represents a rare opportunity to directly improve the illumination and signalization of Alaska's busiest roadways. The majority of the signalization and illumination projects in Alaska are located within the DOT&PF Central Region. As a result, the Central Region's Traffic Design group is in a unique, highly specialized position within DOT&PF - taking on the role of ensuring the technical consistency of hardware, setting regional specifications and details as well as setting the standard for what DOT&PF commonly purchases to meet operational needs, structural standards, and traffic control codes and laws.

The DOT&PF strives to provide all employees a professional, interactive and supportive work environment. At the Central Region Traffic, Safety, and Utilities Section, you will be surrounded by a group of supportive peers with diverse backgrounds, varying areas of expertise, and encouraging attitudes.

This position provides flexible work hours, a competitive salary, personal leave and holidays, excellent health insurance coverage, and many other supplemental benefits such as deferred compensation and health care reimbursement accounts. Benefits are negotiated by the General Government Union (GGU).

The working environment you can expect:
Your office will be located at the DOT&PF Anchorage Headquarters building, 4111 Aviation Avenue. This building is located on the shores of Lake Hood near Ted Stevens International Airport and is easily accessible by a paved multi-use path and People Mover routes 40 and 65. Office hours are flexible and allow for short work weeks and remote work options in accordance with established policies. Requires occasional travel within the Central Region of Alaska to visit project site locations, which may require travel by small aircraft on rare occasions. Most travel does not require overnight stays.
