Base Salary Information:
Engineering Assistant 1: $31.83 Hourly (OT Eligible)
Engineering Assistant 2: $36.68 Hourly (OT Eligible)
Engineering Assistant 3: $41.93 Hourly (OT Eligible)
What you will be doing:
You will be working under the direction of a registered professional engineer, tasked with participating and contributing to a design group in applying engineering principles and practices to identify and solve problems in the field of highway and roadway engineering. Your responsibilities may include preparation of design study reports, roadway geometrics, drainage analysis, accident analysis, contract plans and special provisions, cost estimates, bid schedules, and all other studies and analyses related to the development of capital project contract documents of sufficient quality to be signed and sealed by the engineer of record. You will collaborate with multiple functional groups within the Department, coordinate with staff from multiple areas of expertise, and assist with public and agency meetings to successfully construct capital improvement projects in Central Region, thereby delivering the Department’s mission. This is a flexibly staffed position which will be filled at the level appropriate for the selected candidate’s experience.

As an engineering assistant highway designer, you will be assisting in the planning, design, and ultimate success of transportation improvement projects within the department. You will collaborate with multiple functional sections within the department, gain vast experience in roadway design practical application, become familiar with the project development process of federally funded projects, and contribute to capital project development to successfully implement roadway improvements in Central Region, thereby delivering the mission.

The working environment you can expect:
This position resides in the DOT&PF Central Region Mat-Su District building in Wasilla, AK, located at 500 S Seward Meridian Parkway. This office space has been recently renovated and is centrally located between the cities of Palmer and Wasilla. It is just a minute from the Parks Highway, and a 45 to 60 minute drive to Anchorage. The location adjacent to a separated multi-use pathway provides opportunities for active transportation and breaktime exercise. This office building is generally comprised of cubicle office space, and promotes a team atmosphere of mixed discipline staff. Office hours have some flexibility to include flexible days (RDO's) and routine telework options. Telework options are subject to staff experience, in person training needs, and supervisor discretion. Travel to project sites may be required for short durations.

- Transportation Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods applicable to planning, designing, and construction of transportation systems including traffic analysis, signal analysis, highway capacity, pavement design, bridge construction, planning of transportation projects, environmental analysis of transportation facilities, and transportation network analysis.

Minimum Qualifications
Engineering Assistant 1
Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.
Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
Special Note:
An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.
Engineering-In-Training or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/Engineering Assistant 2 positions will be identified by the employing department.
Engineering Assistant 2
Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
AND

Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitutions:
Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.
Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Engineering Assistant 1, Engineering Assistant 2, or Engineering Assistant 3 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level 1, promotion to the Level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
