The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Game Program Technician located in Anchorage!

What you will be doing:

This position is dedicated to supporting the annual registration of sport fish charter businesses, guides, and vessels. The position develops and prepares materials for the Guide/Business Registration and Logbook Programs, and distributes materials to the guide industry and Alaska Department of Fish and Game area offices. The position also helps support other aspects of the Guide/Business Registration and Logbook Programs including operational planning, report preparation, and support for electronic applications.

Our organization, mission, and culture:

In terms of our values the Alaska Department of Fish & Game strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and wellbeing are paramount and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and treated respectfully. ADF&G protects, maintains, and improves the fish, wildlife, and aquatic plant resources of the state, and manages their use and development in the best interest of the economy and the well-being of the people.  To contribute to the division successfully achieving these values the incumbent will:

  • Be the principal contact person for guided sport fishing business, guide, and vessel registrations; clearly communicate the department's guided sport fishing regulations, policies, and procedures regarding registrations and eLogbooks to interested parties; and respond to questions related to guided sport fishing registrations by phone, email, and in-person.

  • Oversee all registration applications to verify forms are complete, accurate, and legible; maintain contact with department personnel in ADF&G offices statewide to ensure registration procedures remain consistent throughout all area offices; enter all registration applications into the ADF&G system; and scan, file, and store all program paperwork according to established policies and procedures.

  • Assist in the design of registration applications used by the guided sport fishing community and the design of guide eLogbooks; and draft purchase requests, contact vendors, and solicit bids for guided sport fishing registration application materials, saltwater backup logbooks, vessel decals, and year tabs.

  • Provide feedback to ADFG Analyst Programmers on the registration system, eLogbook tracking system, vessel tracking system, and electronic logbook application.

  • Engage with ADF&G staff, other management and enforcement agencies, industry, and the public on registration and logbook related issues and to solicit feedback on the process, materials, and applications.

Benefits of joining our team:

As a member of the Sport Fish guide program team, you will play a key role in implementing the guided sport fishing registration program to document business, guide, and vessel participation, and collection of data from eLogbooks on fishery information such as catch and harvest.  You will interface with fisheries professionals, enforcement agencies, and members of the sport fishing guide industry about registration processes, guided sport fishing regulations, and utility of logbooks to assess and manage guided sport fishing. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the Division's Operational Planning and Reporting processes, develop program materials using programs such as InDesign, participate in outreach activities with other Division staff, and to work with Reasearch Analysts and Programmers to improve reporting applications, data collection techniques, and data summarizing capabilities

The working conditions you can expect:

The position is located at the Fish and Game building in Anchorage close to walking and biking trails along the Campbell Creek greenbelt.  The Anchorage office is the largest ADF&G office in the state and is home to many research and management personnel from the Sport Fish, Commercial Fisheries, and Wildlife Conservation divisions, and Habitat and Subsistence sections; which allows for the opportunity to develop professional relationships with a diversity of other resource professionals and contribute to various fishery resource management projects.  To those who qualify, there is opportunity to work a hybrid telework schedule following the successful completion of the prerequisite probationary period. The position requires an ability to work with a high degree of independence but also work in a team environment collaborating with staff in the Division of Sport Fish Research and Technical Services, regional and area offices, and the guide industry.

  • This position will require occasional travel to meetings, training, and department offices outside Anchorage for up to two weeks at a time.
