The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3/4 (Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary Co-Manager) located in Anchorage!

What you will be doing:

The incumbent functions as part of a two-person team leading field operations for the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary (WISGS); managing all aspects of site operations, research, public use, and wildlife enforcement. Daily duties will include conducting wildlife monitoring surveys, coordinating with commercial charter operators, providing visitor orientation, facility maintenance, and data entry.

Our organization, mission, and culture:

The mission of the Division of Wildlife Conservation is to conserve and enhance Alaska's wildlife and habitats and provide for a wide range of public uses and benefits.

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and wellbeing are paramount and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and treated respectfully.

Benefits of joining our team:

The Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary, a group of seven remote islands in northern Bristol Bay, was established to protect the congregation of Pacific walruses that use Round Island as a summer terrestrial haulout, as well as the habitats for various other wildlife species. The position offers a rewarding and challenging opportunity to be a part of a small and dedicated team working towards conserving and managing a remote island ecosystem.

In addition to conducting wildlife protection, monitoring, and research, the position serves as a front-line representative of the department for visitors to the WISGS. The incumbent will have the opportunity to have meaningful and rewarding interactions with a diverse set of people, including the general public; university researchers; agency wildlife biologists and managers; media; and advocacy groups visiting from around the world.

The working conditions you can expect:

The position will spend the summer season (May-August) in a remote camp on Round Island within the WISGS consisting of a cabin for staff quarters and cooking facilities, and tent sites for the visiting public.  Daily conditions will vary but include extensive time working outdoors in inclement weather, hiking long distances across difficult terrain, boating in marine waters, and interactions with members of the public and media. Pre and post-season work will take place in an office setting in Anchorage and will include entering and analyzing data, writing reports, preparing supplies, maintaining equipment, coordinating logistics, and answering inquiries from the public via phone and email.

This position requires the physical and emotional ability to live and work in a remote backcounty camp with limited modern amentities and communications. The duration of the field season is approximately three months with limited opportunity to return from the field for breaks. The incumbent would need to be available from at least mid-April to early-September to accomplish pre and post season duties. Duties will be conducted a remote area with potential exposure to hazardous conditions.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and qualified candidate that possesses some or all of the following position-specific competencies:

  1. Experience performing field work in remote settings and the demonstrable ability to use sound judgment to make decisions regarding safety in potentially hazardous situations.

  2. Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of wildlife management, including population dynamics, distribution, habitat requirements, life histories, reproduction, behaviors, and conservation measures. Specifically, knowledge of marine mammals and seabirds is helpful, but not a requirement.

  3. Experience collecting, entering, analyzing, and reporting biological data.

  4. Experience organizing and implementing field logistics, including purchasing supplies, coordinating with contractors, and maintaining facilities.
