State of Alaska
Anchorage, AK Full Time
POSTED ON 3/23/2025 CLOSED ON 4/24/2025

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Natural Resource Technician 3 - AVO Anchorage logistics position at State of Alaska?

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys – Alaska Volcano Observatory, is recruiting for a Natural Resource Technician 3 in Anchorage.

This position is open to Alaska Residents only.
Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify.

What You Will Be Doing:
The Alaska Volcano Observatory is responsible for the operation and maintenance of networks of geophysical instrumentation necessary for monitoring volcanic activity in Alaska. In this position, the logistics technician will assist with a range of warehouse and preparatory tasks at the U.S. Geological Survey warehouse in Anchorage, Alaska, and occasionally assist field teams at remote operational hubs throughout Alaska to support our hazard monitoring mission. Some tasks associated with this position include helping prepare equipment and supplies for field deployments, expediting and staging equipment and supplies, moving 70 lb batteries by hand, operating a forklift, and operating basic hand tools. Previous work experience in support of similar remote field projects is preferred and demonstrated ability to prioritize and elevate tasks with general guidance. This position is funded through February 28, 2026.

Mission and Values/Culture:
DGGS provides the State of Alaska with the geologic information necessary to evaluate geologic hazards and to define the State’s oil, gas, coal, and mineral resources. DGGS is a partner agency of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO); AVO conducts monitoring and other scientific investigations to assess the nature, timing, and likelihood of volcanic activity, assesses volcanic hazards, and provides timely and accurate information on volcanic hazards and warnings of impending danger. This position will primarily work with the Volcanology section and will be embedded within AVO facilities in Anchorage, operated by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Benefits of Joining Our Team:
The work environment at DGGS and AVO is fast-paced, collaborative, dynamic, and enriching. Our work directly benefits Alaskans by reducing the risk from volcanic eruptions. The remoteness of Alaska field operations provides an opportunity to employ creative solutions to supply field teams with the necessary logistical support to run complex, remote, field-based operations successfully.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This job is located in Anchorage, Alaska, and has several worksites: the DGGS offices at the Geologic Materials Center at 3651 Penland Parkway, the USGS offices in Anchorage at 4230 University Drive, and the USGS Anchorage warehouse at 4831 Old Seward Highway.
