The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for an Office Assistant 1 position at Spring Creek Correctional Center in Seward, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:
  • Work closely with managers to provide human resource services at a clerical level.
  • Perform duties in multiple administrative functional areas that require adapting internal processes to meet the needs of the organization.
  • Process payroll for approximately 200 employees.
  • Assist with processing all mail for Spring Creek Correctional Complex.
  • Perform services that require determining administrative, security, and/or programmatic tasks to be completed, prioritizing work, and deciding the appropriate action to be taken based on interpretation of organization`s programs, policies and regulations.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:
Spring Creek Correctional Center is a maximum-security state operated adult correctional institution, with a capacity of over 500 male inmates and employs approximately 200 staff. While much of Spring Creek's inmate population serve long term sentences, we also house prisoners serving shorter sentences.

Who We Are Looking For:
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:
  • Attention to Detail: Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  • Clerical: Knowledge of filing, typing, entering data, maintaining records, taking shorthand, and using and completing forms.
  • Computer Skills: Uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work.
  • Customer Service:(*) Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
  • Data Systems: Knowledge of computer hardware and software development and systems as they apply to the conception, specification, analysis, planning, development, installation, test, modification and use of data handling and computing systems in support of aerospace flight and ground systems.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D.;

OR

Acceptance in full standing by an accredited college (this includes acceptance in a concurrent enrollment or dual enrollment program);

OR

A Career Readiness Certificate with ACT WorkKeys® scores of skill level 3 or higher in: Graphic Literacy (formerly Locating Information), Applied Math, and Workplace Documents (formerly Reading for Information).

Special Note:

ACT WorkKeys® skill testing and career readiness certification is available at the Department of Labor and Workforce Development's Alaska Job Centers.

"Acceptance in full standing" means acceptance to a post-secondary program by a college or university and does not require enrollment or participation in the program. This includes acceptance in a program offering college credits while in high school, or both high school and college credits, but does not include taking advanced placement courses in high school.

Some positions in this class require the incumbent operate a State vehicle. Such positions require the selected candidate possess a valid driver's license and be 18 years of age or older on or before the first day of employment.

PREA NOTIFICATION
The Department of Corrections follows and maintains federal and state requirements standards including, but not limited to, Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards which apply to all public and private institutions that house adult or juvenile offenders. PREA standards preclude the department from hiring or promoting anyone who has engaged in, or been convicted of any conduct which would violate PREA standards related to sexual assault including:
  • Sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution;
  • Convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; or
  • Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described above.
EDUCATION
If post-secondary education is required to meet the minimum qualifications, you must fill in the Education and Training section of the Applicant Profile. If you have not obtained a degree, please indicate the number of credit hours earned in the Degrees Obtained field. Copies of transcripts will be required at the time of interview.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR FOREIGN EDUCATION
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the minimum qualifications listed above. If utilizing this education, you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the post-secondary institution. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

WORK EXPERIENCE
If using work experience not already documented in your application, also provide the employer's name, your job title, dates of employment, and whether full-or part-time. Applications will be reviewed to determine if the responses are supported, and minimum qualifications are clearly met. If they are not, the applicant may not advance to the interview and selection phase of the recruitment.

CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS/APSIN/ACOMS
Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN/ACOMS. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
