The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 4 (Sport Fish Hatchery Program Manager) located in Anchorage!

What you will be doing:

Under general direction of the Director of Sport Fish, provides statewide coordination and supervision for all Division of Sport Fish hatcheries, including the William Jack Hernandez Hatchery in Anchorage and the Ruth Burnett Hatchery in Fairbanks, and support of enhancement activity in Southeast Alaska.

Key responsibilities include-

Per Alaska Statute- "through rehabilitation, enhancement, and development programs do all things necessary to ensure perpetual and increasing production and use of the food resources of state waters"

• Represents the Sport Fish Hatchery Program as a member of the Divisional Leadership Team. Assists with planning and direction of enhancement activities throughout the State and makes recommendations to Division Leadership concerning program direction.
• Maintain current levels of fish production for anadromous and lake stocking, investigate both internally and externally for solutions and capacity to increase releases and returns for angling public.
• Assures all facilities are constructed, maintained, and operated in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations in concert with departmental and divisional goals, policies, and procedures.
• Coordinates with regional and departmental staff to implement and evaluate stocking projects, and oversees egg take, tagging and hatchery contribution and performance reporting.
• Participate in Regional Planning Team, working collaboratively to develop brood stock sanctuaries or alternative brood sources to perpetuate increased king and coho salmon enhancement and/or rehabilitation.
• Review Fish Transport Permits and provide information as requested to the legislature regarding production and budgets.
• Presentations to the Alaska Board of Fisheries and other public venues on Sport Fish hatcheries and stocking.
• Hires, trains and directly supervises 2 Fish Culturist III´s, 1 Fishery Biologist II and 1 Maintenance Specialist 1 who in turn supervise ~22 Fish Culturists, Fish& Wildlife Technicians, and maintenance staff. Develops and implements succession plans and cross training activity.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management;

AND

One year of advanced professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 3, Fish Culturist 3, Wildlife Biologist 3, Habitat Biologist 3, or Fisheries Geneticist 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and

• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
