WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

This position is responsible for the proper operation, preventative maintenance and repair of the departments vessel’s machinery and equipment and keep them in a high state of seaworthiness. This position will participate in patrols throughout SE Alaska.

THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT:

This position is in the Alaska Wildlife Trooper/ State Trooper building in Petersburg, which features ample and easily accessible parking. Vessel Technicians work on the vessel to conduct routine maintenance at the dock and in town while not underway. When the vessel is underway crew conducts commercial fishing patrol and gear inspection, along with responding to emergency calls for service.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

  • Knowledge of marine diesel and gasoline engines appropriate for the vessel to which assigned; hydraulic systems, mechanical systems, auxiliary equipment including power plants, pumps and winches; welding techniques and engine repair; tool and equipment used in maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to safely operate all vessel equipment; weld; repair engines, generators, pumps, winches; carry out oral and written instructions.

Four years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of marine inboard diesel and gasoline power plants and auxiliary equipment. At least two years of experience must have been as an engineer on vessels of 160 horsepower or more.

Substitution

Technical schooling in diesel or gasoline power plant maintenance and operation will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Substitution

Successful completion of a one-year training program at the level of Boat Officer 1 as certified by the department will substitute for the required experience.

This position requires the use or possession of a firearm or ammunition. In accordance with the federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 (PL 104-208), if you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, you may not hold this position. 

 A "misdemeanor crime of domestic violence" is an offense that is (1) a misdemeanor under Federal or state law; and (2) has, as an element, the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by a current or former spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited with the victim as a spouse, parent, or guardian, or by a person similarly situated to a spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim. 

 If you have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, do NOT apply for this position.


BACKGROUND CHECK

This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check.  Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.

The successful candidate will be required to read, understand, and agree to via signature, an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety to qualify for this position.
