This position is responsible for the proper operation, preventative maintenance and repair of the departments vessel’s machinery and equipment and keep them in a high state of seaworthiness. This position will participate in patrols throughout SE Alaska.

This position is in the Alaska Wildlife Trooper/ State Trooper building in Petersburg, which features ample and easily accessible parking. Vessel Technicians work on the vessel to conduct routine maintenance at the dock and in town while not underway. When the vessel is underway crew conducts commercial fishing patrol and gear inspection, along with responding to emergency calls for service.WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
- Knowledge of marine diesel and gasoline engines appropriate for the vessel to which assigned; hydraulic systems, mechanical systems, auxiliary equipment including power plants, pumps and winches; welding techniques and engine repair; tool and equipment used in maintenance and repair.
- Ability to safely operate all vessel equipment; weld; repair engines, generators, pumps, winches; carry out oral and written instructions.

Four years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of marine inboard diesel and gasoline power plants and auxiliary equipment. At least two years of experience must have been as an engineer on vessels of 160 horsepower or more.
Substitution
Technical schooling in diesel or gasoline power plant maintenance and operation will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Successful completion of a one-year training program at the level of Boat Officer 1 as certified by the department will substitute for the required experience.
