VSW Engineer 1 – VSW Engineer 1’s perform professional engineering functions associated with the planning, design, and construction of water, sewer or solid waste facilities in remote Alaskan villages. Positions at this level are registered engineers who manage water, sewer or solid waste engineering projects which present difficult technical problems due to constraints such as permafrost, unusual terrain or drainage irregularities, and may require the use of innovative technology. VSW Engineer I’s provide technical advice and assistance to lower-level engineers and community representatives.

VSW Engineering Assistants perform routine assignments designed to familiarize them with the design and construction of water, sewer, and solid waste projects. Incumbents at this level perform clearly defined tasks such as initial project review and verification of routine calculations. Guidelines covering the work are specific. Methods for completion of tasks are explained orally or in writing and work is reviewed both in progress and upon completion.

The activities of the program have a direct positive effect on public health in hundreds of Alaskan villages.
