Job Summary

The Arizona Attorney General’s Office Civil Litigation Division/Environmental Protection Section is seeking a Unit Chief Counsel to directly supervises the Environmental Protection Unit attorneys, staff, law clerks and volunteers who are dedicated to addressing pressing environmental concerns in communities throughout Arizona.

Remote Options: This position may be eligible for Remote Work two days a week.

Job Duties

This position will assigns cases and investigations; mentors the staff with investigations; works with attorneys on trial strategy and organization; second chairs trials with newer attorneys; assigns responsibility, along with the Division Chief Counsel, for participation in NAAG working groups and conference calls; tracks the progress and completion of projects assigned by the Division Chief Counsel; handles calls from consumers, businesses and the press as appropriate as assigned by the Division Chief Counsel; participates in Attorney General forums; reviews and modifies memos, settlement agreements, pleadings and other documents; participates in worker protection outreach presentations and assigns presentations to others in the Unit; conducts case review with attorneys and paralegals to track the progress of cases.

Assists the Division Chief Counsel with a variety of administrative tasks, including coordinating cases with the other units in the section, coordinating review of files for assignment, and responding to legal questions.

Manages personnel-attorneys and paralegals-including hiring recommendations, training, coaching, appraising performance and providing feedback on disciplinary actions; conducts at least monthly staff meetings.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

  • Working knowledge of statutes, legal research methods, and general legal principles.
  • Knowledge of legal techniques and the basic concepts of American Jurisprudence and of the formats utilized in the preparation of legal documents.
  • Knowledge and understanding of applicable consumer fraud statutes, other Arizona statutes, federal laws relating to consumer issues and the rules and regulations of state and federal courts.
  • Must possess knowledge of the practical factors that impact investigative and litigation decisions and goals, including target and defendant responses, opposing counsel strategies and judicial perspectives, and victim/witness considerations.
  • Knowledge of financial considerations for the state and defendants.
  • Additional knowledge, skills and abilities acquired through lengthy and varied experience in legal practice, especially in complex litigation.
  • Responsible for knowing civil procedures, filing deadlines, completing matters on a timely basis, producing professional pleadings and keeping abreast of new statutes and case law.
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Trial skills, negotiating skills and investigative skills.
  • Prepare legal documents memorandum and correspondence efficiently and with a minimum of supervision.
  • Legal and factual issue analysis, legal research, legal writing, oral presentation, and negotiation.
  • Must possess those interpersonal skills necessary to effectively train new attorneys, to foster teamwork, cooperation and conflict resolution among unit members.
  • Other skills include advocacy, public speaking and media communications.
  • Ability to recognize legal issues presented by specific factual situations.
  • Ability to prepare effective litigation strategies and coach attorneys in these skills.
  • Ability to work closely with law enforcement personnel as well as witnesses.
  • Ability to identify issues and prepare concise analysis of legal documents and records.
  • Effective and situation-appropriate interpersonal communication, good judgment, high ethical and professional standards, empathy with other section lawyers and staff.
  • Must have the ability to supervise legal professionals, to deal with personnel issues as they arise and to effectively allocate and prioritize assignments.
  • Ability to function well under time constraints and other pressures.

Selective Preference(s)

10-12 Years Civil Litigation Experience.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Travel is required for this position. A valid Arizona Driver’s License is required, along with consent to have your driving record run periodically.
  • Admission to, and good standing with, the Arizona State Bar is required (include on resume the date(s) of admission in Arizona and any other states). Candidate must have an active Arizona State Bar license.
  • Attorney applicants are required to submit a writing sample with their resume/application profile.

The writing sample should contain an analysis of some substantive legal issue and provide insight concerning your ability to think and to explain and advocate for a particular position.
