Summary
The Forest Ranger II is responsible for overseeing assigned timber management, fire prevention, and fire suppression activities within an assigned area. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions
Acts as crew leader by gathering forest management data for forest insect and disease surveys, landowner forest management plans, timber marking, forest data surveys, and tree seedling checks. Compiles data for forest management plans, recommending forestry practices to enhance timber production, improve wildlife habitat, and meet the goals of the landowner. Informs landowner of the availability of federal assistance programs. Collects geographic information system (GIS) and geographic positioning system (GPS) data for use in forest management programs and in preparation of landowner forest management programs using specialized forestry equipment and hand held data equipment. Locates fire sites following legal land description or directions, assesses fire situations, and determines need for additional manpower and equipment. Performs wild fire suppression activities, including construction of fire lines, and inspects and secures fire lines by removing limbs, snags, and brush, as needed. Operates dozers and plows to construct fire lines. Performs ignition, patrolling, and holding segments of fire lines on prescribed burns. Collects information, such as timber/soil type, seedling plantings, survival rate, property boundaries, and insect and disease infestation. Performs preventative maintenance and repair of agency vehicles, equipment, tools, and facilities. Presents fire prevention and forest educational programs to elementary schools, civic groups, community leaders, and rural volunteer fire departments, utilizing audio-visual aids and costumes. May serve as Incident Commander of forest fires, natural disaster response, and other emergency responses. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of fire laws and regulations. Knowledge of fire prevention, fire suppression, and fire control. Knowledge of geographic information system (GIS) and global positioning system (GPS). Ability to organize, coordinate, and lead fire suppression and disaster response activities. Ability to assist with fire investigations. Ability to collect forest management data. Ability to prepare and present oral and written reports/materials. Ability to identify tree species. Ability to identify and classify forest insects and diseases.
Minimum Qualifications
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus two years of experience as a Forest Ranger I and successful completion of all Forest Ranger I and II training and skills demonstrations. Must possess a commercial drivers license and pass annual physical standard as a condition of employment. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Be able to work in remote locations during hot and cold weather.
  • Be physically able to walk long distances with equipment to mark timber or paint boundary lines.
  • Mechanical, carpentry, and machine operating experience are preferred.
  • Ability to read a map and use an aerial photo preferred.
  • Knowledge of how to use a D-tape, compass, clinometer, or other forestry related tools preferred.
