Under the direction of the Deputy Chief, Fleet (Fire), the Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM) performs a wide variety of mechanical work. The incumbent constructs, repairs, and maintains automotive and heavy maintenance and construction equipment; may instruct and lead or direct the work of apprentices, helpers Service Assistants (Automotive), or other employees, inmates, wards, or resident workers; and do other related work. Incumbents in this position must be willing to work overtime.

Incumbent must possess or obtain a valid California Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with Tank and Air Brake endorsements within six (6) months of appointment. These endorsements are required for the movement of certified equipment and vehicles. Maintaining a valid license with all required endorsements in a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

DMV Pull Program

Participation in the DMV Pull Program is required. The position(s) require(s) a valid Driver's License (DL). You must answer the questions addressing your DL on your application. Ensure you provide your DL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and / or restrictions.

Telework

This position supports the day-to-day business operations for the Fire & Rescue branch which is handled in the office. This is not considered a hybrid telework position.

    The Response Directorate leads the State's incident response efforts and maintains emergency management situational awareness during an incident. Responding to a disaster means addressing the short-term, direct effects of an incident or threat. Response includes immediate actions to save lives, protect property, and meet basic human needs.

    The Cal OES Response Directorate addresses all types of threats and hazards, ranging from accidents, technological hazards, natural disasters, human-caused incidents, pre-planned events, proactive preparedness measures, and mutual aid coordination.

    The Response Directorate reinforces local responses to incident areas by coordinating state-level government, private sector, and nongovernmental roles in support of local governments and other entities. Responses are conducted in accordance with the Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS).

    In the event of an emergency, employees may be contacted and requested to report to work in the event of an emergency. This contact may be outside of your normal working hours (evenings / nights, weekends, and holidays). This service may require irregular work hours, work locations other than the official duty location, and may include duties other than those specified in your official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and you may be required to relocate to emergency sites.
