Description of Job

The position provides direct, active instruction within an adult educational correctional system/facility in core academic subjects, study skills, and life skills to incarcerated students. The position will utilize approved curriculum and assessment and will be in alignment with the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) academic standards for education. Instruction will be performed in line with best practices for professional educators to include active, engaging and creative teaching, the use of technology, and assessment informed lesson planning and goal setting. The position may also deliver social science curriculum designed to challenge and improve upon thinking errors.

Job Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Teach and mentor incarcerated students individually or in large and small group settings to develop and promote basic academic skills in core areas to include reading, writing, math, civics, sciences, social studies, study skills and career development;
  • Determine educational needs of incarcerated students through review of existing records, interviews with students, and use of formal and informal assessment tools;
  • Use appropriate information to develop an individualized learning plan for each student which will include short- and long-term goals in the following areas: education, personal goals, and career goals;
  • Academic goals will include setting benchmarks and objectives directly related to bring student basic skills to a level appropriate to prepare for the GED exam and pursue additional post-secondary training and education;
  • Provide direct, engaging, and creative instructional strategies to guide students in meeting established goals;
  • Utilize direct and indirect instruction - including technology, visual aids, hands-on materials, etc.;
  • Employ differentiated instruction, response to intervention (RTI), and project-based strategies to ensure all students have access to education, are encouraged to persist, and meet expectations of behavior and established progress;
  • Work with your peers to create and manage a strong academic learning environment that also works seamlessly to transition students to post-secondary education programming;
  • Incorporate Life Skills, Employability Skills, and Civics into classrooms through direct instruction;
  • Conduct 6 month standardized assessments utilizing the TABE;
  • Participate in required Individual Education Plan meetings;
  • Work with the Special Education team to ensure IEP goals are implemented and followed;
  • Utilize Google Classroom to supplement instruction;
  • Use professional judgement and data to make recommendations for GED related testing;
  • Prepare reports and maintain records such as student grades, attendance rosters, and training activity details;
  • Observe and evaluate incarcerated student's work to determine progress, provide feedback, and make suggestions for improvement;
  • Document incarcerated student's achievements, competencies and contact hours towards completion of certificate requirements;
  • Participate in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to keep abreast of developments in the field, and integrate relevant information into training programs;
  • Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with fellow teachers in a cooperative effort to promote mutual and continued guidance and improvements;
  • Actively contribute to the *safety and security of the facility through effective offender management and promoting conflict resolution and solutions;
  • Endorse and adhere to the CDOC Mission and Vision promoting commitment and integrity.

  • Safety & Security - position maintains safety and security by training inmates; and will be required to perform inmate counts, searches, escorts, movement control, and offender access to classrooms, as needed. Through conscientious observation and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations and the Code of Penal Discipline, the position promotes a safe and secure work environment.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in an education related field.
  • Must possess at least one of the following credentials:
    • Colorado *Initial or Professional Teacher License (Individuals with a Colorado *Initial License upon hire must obtain the Colorado Professional Teacher License within three (3) years of date of hire)
    • Adult Basic Education Authorization (ABE)

Out of State Applicants Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in an education related field.
  • Must possess the appropriate educator license for your state (A copy of your license MUST be scanned and uploaded to this application at the time your application is submitted.)

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR OUT OF STATE APPLICANTS:
If you are offered a State Teacher I position with the Colorado Department or Corrections, you may be assessed for a Temporary Educator and Training Credential while you are obtaining the appropriate Colorado teaching license necessary for his position. Upon acceptance of the position, you would be expected to initiate the license application with the Colorado Department of Education immediately and provide regular status updates. You would then need to obtain the appropriate Colorado teaching credential within one year of hire.

There is no substitution for the required education. It is imperative that all credentials for this position are valid at the time of application and maintained throughout employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • CDE endorsement in Special Education;
  • CDE endorsement in Reading, English or Math;
  • Master's degree in Education or related field;
  • Experience teaching and assessing high risk or incarcerated adults or youth.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;
  • Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States to be appointed to this position. CDOC uses e-Verify, an Internet-based system, to confirm the eligibility of all newly hired employees to work in the United States. CDOC does not sponsor non-residents of the United States.
  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics;
    • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
    • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
    • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
    • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
    • Swing a baton in a striking technique;
    • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
    • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;
  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment;
  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security;
  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;
  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;
  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;
  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner;
  • Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed inmates;
  • Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments;
  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;
  • Willing and able to travel;
  • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;
  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.

Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Should applicant’s background reveal criminal charges, it shall be the responsibility of the applicant to provide the Department of Corrections with written/official disposition of any charges.

The CDOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. Employees (see exception below) may use marijuana in their personal time but are prohibited from working while under the influence of any substance, including marijuana. A drug test will be administered to all new employees; employees must successfully pass. Random drug screening will occur throughout employment.

Exception: Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified employees are prohibited from the use of marijuana. Health care professionals must check their licensing requirements regarding marijuana use.
