Introduction

The DNREC Fisheries Section works to enhance and protect Delaware’s fish and aquatic resources in support of recreational and commercial fishing and aquaculture. It provides first-class fishing and boating access to Delaware’s many waterways. This Section conducts fisheries research, resource monitoring, and collection of biological information on marine and freshwater fisheries. Summary Statement

This position will lead Delaware’s freshwater trout project, coordinate with hatcheries, conduct stockings, organize staff and volunteers, and manage the associated public outreach. This position will also lead Delaware’s aquatic vegetation control project by monitoring the growth of algae and aquatic weeds in state-owned fishing ponds, managing treatment activities, communicating with shoreline residents, and mapping vegetation. This job includes preparation of grant packages, report writing, obtaining and reviewing permits, providing technical assistance to pond owners, maintaining and operating boats, spray apparatus, and scientific monitoring equipment, and field supervision of technical and seasonal staff.

Preferred Qualification

Applicants who do not possess the preferred qualification will still be eligible to compete for this position if job requirements are met. 6 months experience in aquatic plant and algae identification. 6 months experience in conducting or managing aquatic plant and algae treatment activities. 6 months experience in the transport, handling and stocking of cold-water fish species.

Essential Functions

Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations. Performs statistical analysis of data. Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations. Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents. Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist III Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field. Six months experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met. Two years' experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data. Two years' experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures. Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data. Six months experience in technical report writing.
