The Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) is seeking a full time Lands Resource Specialist - Assistant Fire Warden.

This position will be located in the Southwest Supervisory Area office in Boise, ID.

Job Description :

The Idaho Department of Lands is recruiting for a Lands Resource Specialist - Assistant Fire Warden position in our Southwest Supervisory Area office in Boise, Idaho.

This is a wildland firefighting position . Wildland fire suppression duties will take precedence over all other duties.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead wildland fire suppression, prescribed fire, and fire prevention efforts. This position requires strong leadership, incident command capabilities, and interagency coordination skills. The ideal candidate will oversee district fire personnel, manage prescribed burns, and ensure compliance with state fire rules and regulations while working closely with state, federal, and local partners.

Responsibilities :

Lead district firefighters and serve as Incident Commander on initial attack and emerging incidents.

  • Supervise and mentor 10-15 seasonal firefighters, providing training and performance evaluations.
  • Perform fire behavior analysis and tactical decision-making as an Incident Commander Type 4 (ICT4) or Task Force Leader (TFLD).
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute prescribed burns, including authoring burn plans.
  • Collaborate with Timber and Range specialists on fuel reduction projects.
  • Operate, inspect, and maintain wildland fire engines, chainsaws, portable pumps, UTVs, and ATVs.
  • Work with federal, state, local, and volunteer agencies to coordinate fire suppression and prevention efforts.
  • Serve as District Fire Duty Officer in coordination with the Boise Interagency Dispatch Center.
  • Assist with the administration of Idaho Fire Hazard Reduction laws and the Idaho Forest Practices Act.
  • Maintain Private Fire assessments
  • Prepare fire investigation and incident reports.
  • Oversee district fire vehicle maintenance programs.
  • Prepare fund adjustments and fire cost estimates
  • Execute contracts with fire contractors and vendors.
  • Provide training for volunteer firefighters and lead interagency training efforts.
  • Represent the Department in community outreach and fire prevention initiatives.

Desired Qualifications :

  • ICT4 and TFLD qualifications (or ability to obtain TFLD within three years).
  • ENGB (Engine Boss) or CRWB (Crew Boss) qualification.
  • Demonstrated experience in prescribed fire planning and execution.
  • Strong leadership and incident management skills.
  • Ability to deliver briefings, conduct training sessions, and present complex information clearly.
  • Experience fostering relationships with cooperators, contractors, vendors, and private landowners.
  • Minimum Qualifications :

    Experience :

  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience through technical reports, business correspondence, and oral presentations
  • Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to produce maps and analyze spatial data
  • Some Knowledge of :

  • State and federal laws, rules and regulations in relation to natural resource management activities
  • Methods used to evaluate projects and / or data, analyzing alternatives, and making recommendations
  • Public land survey legal descriptions, aerial photos and topographic and property ownership maps
  • Financial analysis methods used to consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions or proposals to choose the most appropriate one
  • Other : Possession of a valid driver's license.

    This is a leadership position requiring physically demanding fieldwork in extreme conditions, including rugged terrain, smoke, and high-stress emergency situations. The role demands adaptability, strategic thinking, and the ability to make rapid decisions under pressure. Frequent travel and extended deployments may be necessary, with irregular and / or extended hours, including nights and weekends. This position will require working alone or with crews in remote geographic locations, lifting and carrying equipment weighing over 50 pounds, and working in all types of weather.
