The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is hiring a Senior Water Quality Engineer for the Idaho Falls Regional Office.

Positions established at the Technical 1 may be underfilled at the Staff or Associate Engineer level. After successfully completing a training plan, meeting the minimum qualifications for the appropriate level, the employee will be reclassified and compensated accordingly.
Responsibilities :
- Evaluate the engineering of public drinking water, wastewater, and other systems for compliance with applicable rules and standard engineering practices.
- Hold responsibility for regional wastewater and drinking water loan and grant projects.
- Determine independently the acceptability of the planning, design, and operation of water and wastewater systems.
- Work in a team with other DEQ engineering and technical staff on complex environmental quality issues to provide engineering expertise and perspective.
- Resolve engineering related issues from designs prepared by professional engineers in private consulting firms.
- Assist and mentor other engineering staff.
- Develops engineering guidance policies for the professional engineering community.
Criteria for each level of consideration : (see detailed Minimum Qualifications listed below)
Engineer Technical 1 (Salary Range : $37.50 - $45.50)
The Technical 1 level is typically met by Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) as described below AND at least two years of post-licensure work experience as a staff engineer AND possession of a Valid driver's license.
Engineer Staff (Salary Range : $33.00 - $37.50) :
The Staff level is typically met by Licensed in Idaho as a PE, which includes experience as described below AND possession of a Valid driver's license.
Engineer Associate (Salary Level $29.00 - $31.25) :
The Associate level is typically met by certification by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) AND two years of EIT experience as described below, AND possession of a Valid driver's license.
Technical 1 Level Minimum Qualifications :
Licensure : Licensed in Idaho as a PE, or eligibility for comity licensure by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers in accordance with Idaho Code, Title 54, Chapter 12

Candidates must have one of the following :
Required Specialty Minimum Qualification
Six credit hours of education related to water quality and / or water pollution control, including current technologies, construction and operational methods, mechanical systems, and material specifications to include inspection procedures; Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and related laws, guidelines, and practices applicable to wastewater, public drinking water, or solid waste systems; AND approximately two years of EIT experience in water quality.
Desired Qualifications
Staff Engineer Level- Water : Six credit hours of education related to water quality and / or water pollution control, including current technologies, construction and operation methods, mechanical systems, and material specifications to include inspection procedures; Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and related laws, guidelines, and practices applicable to wastewater, public drinking water, or solid waste systems; PLUS approximately two years of engineering experience in the areas listed.
Technical 1 Engineer Level- Water : Experience applying engineering principles in the following aspects of Water Quality Protection : PUBLIC DRINKING WATER (chemical treatment and stabilization of drinking water / groundwater, well design, well construction, and hydrogeology, treatment of surface water for public drinking water supplies;) MUNICIPAL & INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER (physical, biological and chemical treatment of wastewater, facility planning grants, and state revolving fund construction loans;) SOLID WASTE (activities related to solid waste and biosolids management;) SURFACE & GROUNDWATER PROTECTION (permitting, permit certification, storm water and pretreatment, materials and standards, flow analyses, collection and distribution and cross connection control;)DRINKING WATER & WASTEWATER DISINFECTION AND DISINFECTION BY-PRODUCTS (disinfection of water and wastewater and wastewater by-products.) To meet this specialty you must have a combination of approximately four years of post licensure experience in at least two of the five areas listed.
Inspections : Good knowledge of scientific principles and industrial, municipal, and / or private processes that has been gained through possession of a college degree in the Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology, Chemical, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Education or a closely related field; AND one (1) years of full - time work experience conducting industrial / commercial, municipal, and / or private system inspections, including determining facility compliance with rules, statutes, and permits; conducting on - site educational activities; and investigating citizen complaints as a major function of the job; OR possession of an unrelated degree or a combination of education and experience equivalent to a four year undergraduate degree; AND four (4) years of full time experience as described above.
