Positions established at the staff engineer level may be underfilled at the associate or engineer-in-training levels. After successfully completing a training plan, meeting the minimum qualifications for the staff engineer level, and receiving a professional engineering license, the employee will be reclassified and compensated as a staff Engineer.

Position :

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is hiring a Water Quality Engineer for the Idaho Falls Regional Office.

Responsibilities : Responsibilities :

  • Evaluate the engineering of public drinking water, wastewater, and other systems for compliance with applicable rules and standard engineering practices.
  • Hold responsibility for regional wastewater and drinking water loan and grant projects.
  • Determine independently the acceptability of the planning, design, and operation of water and wastewater systems.
  • Work in a team with other DEQ engineering and technical staff on complex environmental quality issues to provide engineering expertise and perspective.
  • Resolve engineering related issues from designs prepared by professional engineers in private consulting firms.
  • Assist and mentor other engineering staff.
  • Develops engineering guidance policies for the professional engineering community.

Criteria for each level of consideration : (see detailed Minimum Qualifications listed below)

Engineer Staff (Salary Range : $33.00 - $37.50) :

The Staff level is typically met by Licensed in Idaho as a PE, which includes experience as described below.

Engineer Associate (Salary Level $29.00 - $31.25) :

The Associate level is typically met by certification by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) AND two years of EIT experience as described below.

Engineer In Training (Salary $28.00 - $29.00)

  • The Engineer in Training (EIT) Graduation from a four-year Engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC / ABET) PLUS within six (6) months of hire receive certification by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers as an Engineer Intern;
  • Certification as an EIT from another jurisdiction that included graduation from a four-year engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC / ABET)

    Graduation from a four-year engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC / ABET) PLUS verification that the candidate has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination.

    Staff Level Minimum Qualifications :

    Licensed in Idaho as a Professional Engineer (PE) OR Eligible for comity licensure by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers in accordance with Idaho Code, Title 54, Chapter 12

    Experience :

  • Analyzing, interpreting and applying federal, state and local laws when applying professional engineering principles and practices.
  • Writing technical engineering reports;
  • Evaluating, selecting and adapting standard engineering plans, specifications and standards in completing projects;
  • Coordinating field work and inspecting projects or facilities for compliance with standards.
  • Valid driver's license

    Associate Level Minimum Qualifications :

    Candidates must have one of the following :

  • Certification by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers as an Engineer-in-Training
  • OR certification from another jurisdiction that included graduation from a four-year engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC / ABET)
  • Two years of E.I.T. experience : reading and interpreting engineering plans, specifications, and standards on projects; interpreting and applying federal, state, and local laws, when applying standard engineering principles and practices; coordinating field work and inspecting projects or facilities for compliance with standards.
  • Experience : analyzing, interpreting and applying federal, state and local laws when applying professional engineering principles and practices; writing technical engineering reports; evaluating, selecting and adapting standard engineering plans, specifications and standards in completing projects; coordinating field work and inspecting projects or facilities for compliance with standards.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Engineer In Training Level Minimum Qualifications :

  • Graduation from a four-year Engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC / ABET) PLUS within six (6) months of hire receive certification by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers as an Engineer Intern;

  • Six credit hours of education related to water quality and / or water pollution control, including current technologies, construction and operational methods, mechanical systems, and material specifications to include inspection procedures; Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and related laws, guidelines, and practices applicable to wastewater, public drinking water, or solid waste systems; AND approximately two years of EIT experience in water quality.
  • Six credit hours of education related to water quality and / or water pollution control, including current technologies, construction and operation methods, mechanical systems, and material specifications to include inspection procedures; Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and related laws, guidelines, and practices applicable to wastewater, public drinking water, or solid waste systems; PLUS approximately two years of engineering experience in the areas listed.
  • Good knowledge of scientific principles and industrial, municipal, and / or private processes that has been gained through possession of a college degree in the Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology, Chemical, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Education or a closely related field; AND one (1) years of full - time work experience conducting industrial / commercial, municipal, and / or private system inspections, including determining facility compliance with rules, statutes, and permits; conducting on - site educational activities; and investigating citizen complaints as a major function of the job; OR possession of an unrelated degree or a combination of education and experience equivalent to a four year undergraduate degree; AND four (4) years of full time experience as described above.
  • Desired Specialty Minimum Qualification

  • Six credit hours of education related to water quality inspection procedures and Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and related laws, guidelines, and practices applicable to wastewater, public drinking water, or solid waste systems.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Ability to sit and work on a computer for 2-4 hours at a time.
  • Ability to bend and reach for filing purposes.
  • Some periods of heavy reading and typing are required.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds when working with file boxes.
  • Ability to climb ladders, staircases, work on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds over rough terrain.
  • Ability to work in adverse or inclement weather.
  • Ability to work in extreme hot or cold temperatures both outside and inside.
  • Ability to work on elevated instrument platforms, ladders, etc.
  • Field sites may involve working near and with drilling rigs, backhoes, trucks and other large equipment in rough terrain.
  • May work in the vicinity of loud noise.
  • May come into contact with hazardous waste / materials.
  • Required Licensure or Certifications :

    You must identify your PE#, and State of issuance if other than Idaho, on your resume to be eligible for this position.
