Position Overview

Under general supervision, performs professional assignments related to routine activities involving the enforcement of radiological health laws and regulations as they pertain to all types of x-ray producing electronic products; plans and conducts surveys of conventional radiation facilities on a regional or statewide basis; performs special investigations of reports of unaccredited technologists or allegations of technical incompetence of technologists; performs investigations and evaluations of laser safety programs radiation sources that may pose a health hazard; speaks to interested groups regarding radiological health matters; participates in determination of shielding requirements for electronic devices that produce ionizing radiation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assists with or conducts inspections of conventional x-ray installations and prepares technical reports and correspondence relating to inspection results.
  • Advises and consults with licensed practitioners of the healing arts and other professionals on compliance and quality assurance aspects of x-ray systems.
  • Assists with or conducts special investigations of reports of unaccredited radiation technologists, or allegations of technical incompetence of radiation technologists in sufficient depth to provide required evidence for legal action.
  • Performs the duties of assigned team position as specified in the Standard Operating Procedure of the Illinois Plan for Radiological Accidents.

Minimum Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of: (a) a Bachelor’s Degree in biology, chemistry, or physics, supplemented by one year of appropriate experience; or (b) an Associate’s degree in biology, chemistry, or physics, supplemented by three (3) years of appropriate experience.

  • Preference is given to candidates who possess a formal degree and whose training includes the completion of a program of formal training in x-ray technology of not less than two years duration at a school approved by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association or two year college courses leading to an Associate Arts degree in Radiologic Technology

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires working knowledge of operating procedures and compliance requirements (both state and federal) for medical and industrial radiation producing equipment.
  • Requires working knowledge of the use for and operation of radiation detection and machine survey instruments.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively with professionals in the radiological health community.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires a criminal history check through Illinois State Police.
  • Requires the employee to have and maintain a driver's license valid in the State of Illinois.
