Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs is searching to hire a Security Officer Sergeant at our Manteo Veterans’ Home. Under the direction of the Security Officer Chief, this position is responsible for helping to ensure that our home continue to remain a safe place for employees to work and for the veterans in our care to feel safe and secure. Job Responsibilities
- 25% Serves as assistant to the Security Officer Chief on a designated shift
- 20% Serves as designated lead worker over Security Officers
- 20% Operates automobiles for the transportation of members from one location to another on grounds and to outside health services
- 10% Assist the supervisor with handling problem incidents
- 10% Supervises and participates in checking buildings and grounds for unauthorized persons, breaches of security, or unsafe conditions
- 10% Answers all fire safety related alarms and incidents
- 5% Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school
- One (1) year of experience in safety and protection service or a related field
Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)
- Extensive knowledge of facility security requirements and regulations
- Working knowledge of emergency response procedures and techniques, including first aid, CPR, fire safety and controls, and response protocols for security breaches
- Working knowledge of security enforcement practices and techniques, and supervisory practices
- One (1) year of experience recognizing and providing initial response to security breaches and safety hazards
- One (1) year of experience supervising subordinate officers and coordinating the security program with facility management and community officials
- One (1) year of experience completing security training, following written procedures and instructions, and to organizing observed facts into activity and incident reports
Conditions of Employment
- Must pass a background check
- Must complete a drug screen and pre-employment physical
- Must meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance
- Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
- Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
- Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends. This also requires the ability to work in a 24 hour ‘on call’ capacity.
Work Hours: 2:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. Every Other Weekend
