Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire a Site Technician II at Goose Lake Prairie State Natural Area. This position will provide maintenance at the site, operate farming machinery for site construction and heavy equipment such as bulldozers, backhoes and road grinders, perform minor plumbing and HVAC, register hunters, operate check stations and participate in prescribed burns. Goose Lake's Tall Grass Nature Trail displays the largest stand of tall grass prairie remaining in Illinois. Many of the park's ponds and marshes resulted from the 1890 decision by local farmers to drain Goose Lake. The Prairie View Trail takes you to the highest point in Goose Lake Prairie - a surface mine spoil mound - and offers a panoramic view of reclaimed prairie and prairie marsh and mine areas. Essential Functions

  • Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and improvements to structures, facilities, roads, and day use areas at Goose Lake Prairie SNA, Heidecke Lake, and Morris Wetland
  • Performs repairs and prescribed preventative maintenance on vehicles, equipment, and signage at all sites
  • Participates in grounds and facility maintenance at all sites
  • Provides support to the hunting and interpretive programs of the sites
  • Assists in implementing safety and security at the sites
  • Serves as lead worker to seasonal or volunteer workers engaged in routine site maintenance and operational activities
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and / or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Requires possession of a valid Class A CDL driver’s license with Air Brakes designation.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and / or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and / or warehousing.
  • Two (2) years of experience in following written and oral instructions.
  • One (1) year of experience informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and regulation.
  • One (1) year of experience in outdoor recreation,
  • One (1) year of experience in groundskeeping.

  • Ability to pass background check.
  • Ability to obtain pesticide operator’s license within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis.
  • Ability to physically operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.
  • Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain without mechanical assistance.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid / CPR Certification.
  • Ability to negotiate natural obstacles while carrying or transporting a variety of equipment.
