Job Description
The Design Bureau is seeking an Assistant Survey Party Chief to join us to accomplish the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Mission: Making Lives Better Through Transportation .

Location: Ames, Iowa
Shift: Full-Time (40 hours/week), Days, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM
Travel: Some travel/occasional overnight
As the Assistant Survey Party Chief, you will perform technical engineering survey work collecting topographic survey data and create a detailed map of project areas for the use in the development of transportation improvement projects.
Our best candidate will have excellent communication skills, knowledge of engineering survey procedures and electronic data collection techniques. Also, some CADD mapping and GNSS operation is required.
Applicants must have experience using survey instruments including electronic total stations, global positioning equipment, survey levels, and a thorough understanding of feature and linking codes. Bentley MicroStation software is used.
You also must be able to work outdoors year around in all weather conditions and on uneven terrain.

- Possess and maintain a valid Class C Operator driver's license in the State of Iowa.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
- Three years of full-time work experience in engineering survey, which included the operation of survey instruments.
- A total of three years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in civil engineering, construction engineering, or photogrammetry equals one year of full-time experience.
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work in survey, construction, maintenance, or design as a Highway Technician Associate, Highway Technician, Highway Technician Senior, Construction Technician Assistant, Construction Technician, or Construction Technician Senior.
Additional Qualification Requirements
- All positions are required to have and maintain a minimum of a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operator's License.
- Prior to starting employment, all persons are required to have a post offer pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
- Employees must be able to travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments
