The Port of New Orleans (PORTNOLA) is a diverse deep-water port uniquely located on the Mississippi River near the Gulf of Mexico. PORTNOLA is seeking a Dredge Deckhand who can complete daily tasks on a marine vessel.
Dredge Deckhands are responsible for assisting the crew as needed, performing daily checks on engines, housekeeping, and appearance of the vessel, securing deck lines, and a variety of other related duties. Typically, Dredge Deckhands will work under close supervision of the Marine Operator 3. Some daily responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Loading and unloading materials and equipment.
- Performs maintenance on equipment including de-rusting and painting.
- Responsible for upkeep and operation of safety equipment.
- Performs other related duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervisor.
- Performs other related administrative and technical duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.).
The position currently consists of working a forty (40) hour work week (Monday – Wednesday) with overtime as necessary.
Potential starting salary depends upon qualifications:
$16.06/hr. to $22.48/hr.

Dredge Deckhand
Waterfront Dredge Department
This position serves as a Dredge Deck Hand in the Dredge Department of the Port of New Orleans Maintenance Division.
This position participates in the required PORT training program and obtains additional training in order to facilitate the efficient performance duties and/or required tasks. This is a safety sensitive position that requires random drug screening throughout the year. The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License, Class D and be knowledgeable and capable of the safe operation of various types of equipment required to fulfill the needs of the position and the PORT. The incumbent shall utilize a telephone, cell phone, two-way communication device, computer, and e-mail to facilitate communications if required. The incumbent must be able to perform duties many times without direct supervision and be knowledgeable enough to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise.
90% Daily Operations
Under the direct supervision of the Dredge Captain, Mate, or other Dredge supervisory personnel, incumbent performs manual duties aboard dredge, dredge tender, anchor handling unit, and floating pipelines.
These duties include but are not limited to:
- Fastens hawsers and mooring lines to dredge, dredge support vessels, wharves, barges, piers, and pilings. Checks towing rigging, lines, wires, etc.
- Lowers and raises anchors by vessel’s winches to position dredge for operating, mooring, and towing.
- Performs routine maintenance on dredge and ancillary vessels, such as cleaning, chipping, scraping, painting, changing oil and filters, polishing bright work, etc.
- Loads and unloads materials for the dredge.
- Moves swing wires to facilitate forward movement of dredge.
- Assist in deck and equipment repairs.
- Assist in handling discharge lines and dredge anchors.
5% Safety and Loss Prevention Management
Participate and comply with all Port safety practices, programs, and policies. Assist in take corrective action to eliminate all deficiencies noted on safety inspections. Monitors daily procedures and workflow for unsafe situations and notifies chain of command of possible unsafe practices. Works safely, efficiently, and as directed. Conducts regular safety inspections of tools used and immediate work area, participates in the Port’s JSA program. Fosters and supports a culture of safety with all coworkers.
5% Other Duties, Including Emergency Support
Incumbent is required to perform a variety of tasks and assignments, as directed by the supervisor, necessary to fulfill the mission of Waterfront Maintenance Department and/or Port Maintenance Division. Other work as directed. Essential employee during emergencies, natural disasters, etc. Must be immediately available to respond to problems arising at facilities, Equipment, and Port owned bridges during times of emergencies. Available in person, by phone, and via the internet at all times.
