This position is located at Tickfaw State Park in Springfield, LA.
If offered the position, candidate must be able to drive to Baton Rouge to submit a background check.
No Civil Service test score is required in order to be considered for this vacancy.This position is in a Career Progression Group up to an Interpretive Ranger 3. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as an Interpretive Ranger 1, 2, or 3 based on the qualifications of the selected applicant. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience in archaeological or anthropological work; or in planning or presenting interpretive or educational programs relating to cultural or physical history; OR
Three years of experience in conservation work or natural resource management; or in planning or presenting interpretive or educational programs relating to the natural environment; OR
A bachelor's degree.
To provide site interpretation to park visitors through guided tours, audio-visual presentations, living history demonstrations and other methods.
LEVEL OF WORK:
Entry.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Direct supervision from a Park Manager. Alternative reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May provide functional supervision over museum, visitor center or site personnel as conditions warrant.
LOCATION OF WORK:
Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism – Office of State Parks. Other locations may be approved by SCS.
JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Park Rangers by the absence of enforcement responsibility and P.O.S.T. certification.
Differs from Interpretive Ranger 2 by the absence of experienced interpretive duties.
35%Interpretive Services
•Oversees the implementation and effectiveness of site level educational programs and interpretive effectiveness with the conduct of program audits and evaluations.
•Records program effectiveness and reports program evaluations and participation numbers as directed.
•Works to ensure OPS collaborative programming meets grade-level expectations.
•Plans, constructs, and displays interpretive exhibits for visitor centers as well as site promotional spaces.
•Assists in the recruitment and training of volunteers for assistance in programming.
•Coordinates with Friends group.
•Provides and performs programming with other Interpretive Rangers.
25%Custodial/Housekeeping
•Maintains cleanliness of workstation and surrounding areas.
•Assists staff with cleaning the interior and exterior of buildings in preparation for incoming reservations, to include grounds upkeep.
•Keeps trails clear of debris and litter.
15%Program Development
•Conceptualizes, designs, coordinates, and develops new educational programs, audio visuals, and trails for visitor education and enjoyment.
•Initiates, conducts, and reviews original research in support of proposed and/or existing programs, exhibits, and to develop interpretive them.es.
•Researches current information on topics and techniques for use in lectures and programs.
•Works with site manager and Interpretive Services to review programs and exhibits for historical accuracy, interpretive value, and agency direction.
•Conducts research for and writes press releases.
•Responds timely to inquiries from media and general public.
•Writes, edits, and produces a variety of promotional materials such as brochures, flyers, and event programs.
•Delivers speeches and programs throughout the community to professional organizations, school representatives, public and private clubs, businesses, and other groups to enhance the interest in the site and its activities.
15%Staff Supervision
•Provides functional supervision over supporting staff; assists with managing, directing, and supervising the daily activities and professional development of site interpretive personnel.
•Coordinates training when necessary.
•Works with site manager to interview and select new interpretive staff.
10%Guest Relations
•Provides assistance to guests by answering questions about other park amenities.
•Operates the fee station at the park entrance in order to register overnight guests, collect day use fees, collect payments for rentals, sell gift shop items, etc.
Performs other related duties as assigned and performs customer service to a high degree of excellence.
