CURRENT VACANCY INFORMATION

The A.R. Gould School, located within the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, Maine, is currently seeking a 7-12 Special Education teacher to join a dynamic team of educators.

Job Description

This is a year-round, 224 day position. The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide evidence based on specially designed instruction through a range of high school subjects to students detained within the Long Creek Youth Development Center. The Special Education teacher’s working focus, as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, is to assist students in their continuing education efforts towards obtaining a high school diploma or GED while improving academic and functional skills.

Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to :

Assessing the level of functioning of all students.

Case Management and IEP development, implementation and progress monitoring.

Consulting with regular education teachers on IEP modifications and student needs.

Coordination work with other schools the student may be transferred to or from.

Conduction pre-and post-tests when applicable.

Maintaining and implementing data collection systems.

Managing student records in a timely and appropriate manner.

Participating in staff development activities.

Working with others to address and resolve student issues.

Serve as a role model while managing student behavior.

Essential Skills And Knowledge

To be successful in this position you will need to have knowledge and abilities in the following areas:

Knowledge of department functions, objectives, policies and programs.

Knowledge of teaching principles, practices, methods and techniques.

Knowledge of human behavior and performance, neurodiversity and basic psychological processes such as learning and motivation, memory, executive skills, etc.

Knowledge of adult and adolescent learning principles, practices methods and techniques.

Knowledge of curriculum development, classroom instruction, and educational planning in special education to include transition planning.

Ability to apply effective behavior management techniques.

Ability to assess student needs and develop/modify instruction as necessary to support the growth and abilities of all students.

Ability to develop curriculum and lesson plans in core content areas.

Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and via written work.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Ability to work with and manage at-risk youth.

Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements

Maine Teacher's Certificate for appropriate subject and/or grade(s) as issued by the Maine Department of Education:

Professional 7-12 Special Education certification preferred (082). Conditionally Certified Special Education Teachers considered and urged to apply.
