Introduction

The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is an independent State agency that regulates Maryland’s $46 billion insurance industry and protects consumers by monitoring and enforcing insurers’ and insurance professionals’ compliance with State law.�Staff members are subject matter experts who serve as a resource for lawmakers, consumers, and other public and private entities.� � The MIA is charged with a broad range of responsibilities including the licensure of insurance carriers and insurance producers (brokers/agents) operating in Maryland, the conduct of financial examinations of companies to monitor financial solvency, and the review and approval of rates and contract forms. The MIA investigates reports of consumer fraud and consumer complaints about life, health, automobile, homeowners, and/or property insurance.� Insurance carriers are subject to market conduct examinations and other actions to monitor compliance with Maryland law.�The MIA also has a unit dedicated to consumer education and outreach, which participates in hundreds of events and reaches thousands of individual consumers annually.

**Salary Guidelines Apply Insurance Specialist I (grade 14) - $53,808 -� $58,923/year, with potential progression to $86,322/year Insurance Specialist II (grade 15) - $57,275 -� $65,147/year, with potential progression to $92,108/year Insurance Specialist III (grade 16) - $60,987 - $70,816/year, with potential progression to $98,313/year��

Main Purpose of Job

This position will handle consumer complaints through the Consumer Education and Advocacy Unit's Rapid Response Program. They will assist with the unit's outreach efforts and respond to consumer questions received by the Consumer Education and Advocacy Unit.�

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Insurance Specialist I Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.� � Experience: One year of experience in the property and casualty insurance industry as an agent, customer service representative, complaint investigator, claims adjuster or underwriter; or�one year as a Complaint Investigator for the Maryland Insurance Administration. � Notes:� � 1. A high school diploma or GED and five years of experience in the property and casualty insurance industry as an agent, customer service representative, complaint investigator, claims adjuster or underwriter may substitute for the minimum qualification. � 2. A high school diploma or GED and five years of experience investigating complaints for the Maryland Insurance Administration may substitute for the required education. Insurance Specialist II Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.� � Experience: One year of experience as an Insurance Specialist I; or�two years of experience in the property and casualty insurance industry as an agent, customer service representative, complaint investigator, claims adjuster or underwriter; or�two years of experience investigating complaints for the Maryland Insurance Administration. � Notes:� � 1. DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Excellent organization, verbal and written communication skills. Familiarity with Maryland insurance laws and regulations.
