Introduction

The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is an independent State agency that regulates Maryland’s $46 billion insurance industry and protects consumers by monitoring and enforcing insurers’ and insurance professionals’ compliance with State law. Staff members are subject matter experts who serve as a resource for lawmakers, consumers, and other public and private entities.

The MIA is charged with a broad range of responsibilities including the licensure of insurance carriers and insurance producers (brokers/agents) operating in Maryland, the conduct of financial examinations of companies to monitor financial solvency, and the review and approval of rates and contract forms. The MIA investigates reports of consumer fraud and consumer complaints about life, health, automobile, homeowners, and/or property insurance. Insurance carriers are subject to market conduct examinations and other actions to monitor compliance with Maryland law. The MIA also has a unit dedicated to consumer education and outreach, which participates in hundreds of events and reaches thousands of individual consumers annually.

POSITION DUTIES

The Property & Casualty Division is recruiting for a full-time contractual Actuarial Analyst I level position. This position handles property and casualty actuarial responsibilities for the MIA with primary focus on personal and commercial lines rate filings from or on behalf of insurance carriers. The Actuarial Analyst I performs rate filing reviews in accordance with actuarial principles, Maryland statutes, and guidelines of the Property & Casualty Division. The incumbent provides support to the Chief Actuary as it pertains to actuarial/financial reports and the review of proposed legislation and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Statistics or related fields.

Experience: One (1) to two (2) years of actuarial or insurance analysis experience in the Property & Casualty industry.

Special Requirement: Successful completion of one (1) Casualty Actuarial Society exam.

Desired Or Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze information and draw accurate conclusions.
  • Strong computer experience, to include experience with Microsoft Excel and Word.

Selection Plan

Applicant must document, in their resume, completion of actuarial exam(s) as required by the specific job level. Proof of completion must be submitted prior to an interview. Clearly indicate your college degree and major in your resume. For education obtained outside the of U.S., a course-by-course evaluation of your foreign transcript will be required. Candidates scheduled for an interview must submit verification of education prior to the appointment.

Benefits

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
