MDE headquarters facility offers free parking, a food court, and a gym.GRADE20LOCATION OF POSITIONMaryland Department of the Environment Land & Material Administration Land Restoration Program 1800 Washington Blvd. Baltimore, MD 21230Main Purpose of JobThe Toxicologist will oversee and function as the technical expert regarding human health risk assessment and the assessment and cleanup activities conducted by external parties in the Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP) and Controlled Hazardous Substances (CHS) sites throughout Maryland. This includes the development and documentation of human health and environmental risk assessments for the Land Restoration Program (LRP), based on exposure to toxic substances and other environmental contaminants by MDE regulations and policy and EPA’s Risk Assessment Guidance for Superfund (RAGS). Additionally, this incumbent will assist in analyzing and field screening environmental samples collected to characterize potentially contaminated sites. The incumbent will require advanced knowledge to evaluate and comment on ecological risk assessments provided by consultants to the LRP State and Federal Assessment and Remediation Division. The incumbent will assist with recommendations and implement policies established by the Department to meet its goal of protecting public health and the environment from potential or actual toxic substance impacts as part of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) process. The working conditions of this position may involve exposure to hazardous conditions which may result in injury. The incumbent may be required to visit sites containing chemical and physical hazards (e.g., old landfills, former spill areas, dilapidated buildings). Site visits may require the incumbent to use protective equipment such as goggles, gloves, masks, etc.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation : A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.Experience : Six years of experience performing professional environmental geological work.Notes : Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science for the required education and one year of the required experience.Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal / Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSIt is preferred that the selected candidate has the following : Experience writing and reviewing risk assessments; Excellent writing skills; Experience discussing public health impacts at public meetings; Experience as an expert witness for environmental remediation litigation.LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONSEmployees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSEmployees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment.Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.SELECTION PROCESSPlease make sure that you provide sufficient information on your application to show that you meet the qualifications for this recruitment.
