POSITION DUTIES

The main purpose of this position is to plan, organize, and direct a volunteer program at Eastern Correctional Institution and Eastern Correctional Institution-Annex

  • Planning and Directing Volunteer Programs
  • Develops plans for the effective operation of the volunteer program at a correctional institution.
  • May provide advice and guidance to students and volunteers
  • Directs the activities of volunteers and educates the community to the need for volunteers and the volunteer program at the institution
  • Makes presentations to community groups to promote volunteer activities.
  • Coordinates the distribution of donated materials and supplies
  • Produces Institutional entries for volunteer programs
  • Ensure compliance with all departmental policies, to include sexual harassment and its specific requirements for management’s prompt and effective attention, reporting and response to such complaints
  • Manages inmate organizations and programs
  • Coordinates special population shows and events
  • Coordinates population fund raising walkathons and sports festivals
  • Coordinates the activities of various volunteer groups
  • Manages waiting lists for inmate volunteer programming Related Administrative Duties
  • Provides program information & recommendations for use in preparing reports for the volunteer program
  • Writes reports, correspondence, newsletters & other documents regarding volunteer programs
  • Conducts regular meetings with volunteer groups
  • Prepares volunteers to work in the correctional setting, including but not limited to, requesting background checks, providing applications, interviewing perspective volunteers, and conducting volunteer orientation
  • Maintains records pertaining to volunteer programs and individual volunteers
  • Completes other projects and assignments as directed by the Warden or Facility Administrator

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Six years of experience involving planning, coordinating and evaluating volunteer activities in a state facility, institution or community-based program.

Notes

  • Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, including 30 credit hours in social sciences, journalism, public relations or a related field and two years of experience involving planning, coordinating and evaluating volunteer activities in a state facility, institution or community-based program for the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute the possession of graduate level education in social sciences, journalism, public relations or a related field from an accredited college or university at a rate of 30 credit hours for five years of the required experience.

Desired Or Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

Two years of experience working with computer software; Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, access and publisher.

Two years of experience supervising programs involving large groups.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete training and maintain current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

  • Personal Leave - new State employees are awarded six (6) personnel days annually (prorated based on start date)
  • Annual Leave - ten (10) days of accumulated annual leave per year
  • Sick Leave - fifteen (15) days of accumulated sick leave per year
  • Parental Leave - up to sixty (60) days of paid parental leave upon the birth or adoption of a child
  • Holidays - State employees also celebrate at least twelve (12) holidays per year
  • Pension - State employees earn credit towards a retirement pension
