Job Summary
The Department of Corrections is hiring a Chief General Counsel. This position will provide oversight for the Department of Corrections’ legal affairs including : providing strategic privileged legal advice to the Commissioner and executive management to ensure the department’s operations, programs, and policies are administered in compliance with applicable legal requirements; advising on all complex legal issues with a focus on appropriate consideration of risk exposure and balancing of operational needs; providing litigation defense in a particularly litigious environment and negotiating resolution of matters in state, federal, and administrative venues, including exercising delegated authority from the Attorney General for state and federal habeas matters; advising and drafting legislative and regulatory proposals; serving as the legal expert as a member of the Commissioner’s executive management team; and set strategic direction and provide leadership to the Office of Legal Affairs.

Physical Requirements
The selected finalist is required to review and sign a Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) for this position and may be required to complete a tuberculosis screening prior to hire.
Additional Requirements
The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and / or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and / or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.
New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
