The Sequencing and Bioinformatics Supervisor serves to supervise scientific research and analytical activities of the Sequencing and Bioinformatics Unit of the Infectious Disease Laboratory. The Sequencing and Bioinformatics Unit of the Infectious Disease Laboratory utilizes state-of-the-art diagnostic technology to analyze human specimens for bacterial, fungal and parasitic agents of infectious and communicable diseases in support of epidemiological investigations of disease outbreaks and disease surveillance within the State of Minnesota. This position will :
Direct and assist in the performance of state-of-the-art laboratory methods
Evaluate and implement advanced technologies to continually improve the Infectious Disease program
Incorporate continuous quality control / quality assurance measures to fulfill accreditation requirements
Provide oversight of grant funded activities
Represent MDH in public forums, including presentations at research symposia and conferences

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
4 years of experience of lab training or experience that includes : Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) or bioinformatics.
Supervisory or other leadership experience OR completion of a leadership development program (such as Emerging Leaders Institute, etc.).
Previous experience below is required to be considered a candidate and will be assessed during the interview process :
Experience with laboratory quality assurance practices
Experience implementing and evaluating laboratory methods
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical information to diverse audiences and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
A master’s degree in microbiology, chemistry, public health, laboratory science, or related science field may substitute for 18 months of experience, and a PhD for 2 years.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in high complexity testing within one of the following subspecialties : Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, or Virology
Advanced degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Public Health, or related field.
Experience with scientific communication including but not limited to poster, presentation, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
Experience with phylogenetic analysis.
Demonstrated experience in developing molecular methods using next-generation sequencing and existing genomic analysis tools (e.g. Nextstrain, MicrobeTrace, Microreact, etc)
Experience with database use and management for sequencing and bioinformatics data developing and implementing bioinformatics.
