Job Location: This position will be located in Kansas City, MO
This is a first-level legal support position responsible for assisting in the preparation of legal documents, scheduling meetings, and preparing reports. The Division of Legal Services (DLS), Litigation Unit is a law office that provides comprehensive legal support to all programs and support divisions in the Department of Social Services.
The duties of this position are complex and detail oriented. This position is expected to recognize and act appropriately regarding case file matters as they come into the DLS office. The Divisions’ Attorneys represent a number of regions and counties throughout the state. This position is responsible for confirming the accurate procedure is followed for each court.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Supports the Attorneys of DLS.
- Electronically filing (ECF) legal documents with the courts, maintaining case files, requesting records and reports.
- Calendaring court appearances and meetings for attorneys.
- Scheduling depositions and attending when necessary.
- Preparing letters, legal documents and correspondence, with little to no direction or supervision.
- Preparing documents for BATES stamping.
- Setting up and maintaining client files.
- Assisting in trial preparation and attending trial when necessary.
- Managing the referral emails, opening and/or closing case referrals, processing referrals to the Attorney General's Office and ensuring they are provided to appropriate parties for handling.
- This person will also be responsible for sending and receiving discovery requests, and scheduling and retaining special process servers throughout the duration of the case.
Desired Skills:
- The ideal candidate must have good organizational skills, dependability, a high level of discretion in working with highly confidential case information, and be able to prepare complex reports.
- Candidate should have a full understanding of legal documents, knowledge on how to research information for case files, be comfortable with contacting parties relevant to a case, collect necessary information and documentation to support filings, as well as many other duties that require action associated with the attorneys' case files, ensuring timelines and deadlines are not missed.
Qualifications:
- Associate degree or 2-4 years of experience in a legal environment. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
