Job Description:
As NDOT's content writer, you are responsible for sharing NDOT's story by taking what is happening in the agency and telling it to internal teammates, other state agencies, stakeholders, the public and the media in traditional and digital form. Responsibilities include working with subject matter experts to produce technical press releases, technical agency reports and editing the work of others.
A strong writing background is required along with knowledge of and experience in writing for digital platforms (i.e. social media, email newsletters, and blogs). Strong organization and project management skills will serve this position well, as will critical time management and collaboration skills. An understanding of how stakeholders consume stories and news will aid the successful candidate. Familiarity with federal or state government and/or the transportation industry is not required but would be beneficial.

Pay range is $21.523 - $31.727 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.
JOB DUTIES:
- Drafting technical press releases and stories related to projects, initiatives, and/or educational efforts managed by the NDOT.
- Develop strong written content to assist internal and external audiences in understanding the NDOT business.
- Serve as an editor to others for writing pieces or presentations.
- Coordinate schedules, timelines, and deadlines for content.
- Structure internal and external publications to meet the agency's goals and mission.
- Finding unique leads to develop impactful stories on internal or external platforms to promote the NDOT's work and/or teammates.
- Plan engaging stories and content to match agency initiatives or campaigns for external and internal audiences.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts and key stakeholders to successfully produce stories, press releases, speeches, and presentations.
- Assist in developing social media content.
- Develop Standard Operating Procedures for use by the Communication Division.
- Perform other necessary duties as assigned.
Requirements/Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, advertising, graphic arts, digital media, videography, or related field and at least one year of experience in coordinating, planning, and managing public relations/publicity campaigns, mass media communication activities and/or public information programs. Required experience may substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Background in news media, television media, digital media, and/or organizational content creation.
- Prior experience with successfully implementing and executing a written communications strategy.
- Experience and proficiency with graphic design, video/photo editing, and digital media formats.
Other:
- Must have a valid driver’s license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
- Occasional overnight travel may be required.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
- Clear knowledge of and strong ability to write in AP style.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), e-commerce platforms, and/or social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube).
- Multi-task and work across functionally with many different personality types.
- An extremely organized, highly detailed individual with attention to detail who can handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Skillset necessary to work on a team and in a team environment.
- Strong customer service skills, professional appearance, and demeanor.
- Strong listening, written, and oral communication skills.
- Passion to improve the quality of life of Nebraskans and positively influence community members.
- Judgment that meets the agency's standard of excellence when interacting with internal and external stakeholders.

- Ability to create engaging digital content from a program listed above or a similar platform.
