The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Bridge Maintenance, has a full-time vacancy for a Lift Bridge Worker III.
YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education
SUMMARY: To perform skilled work in the operation, maintenance and lubrication of the Memorial Bridge, Sarah Mildred Long Bridge, Hampton River Bridge and/or Little Harbor Bridge. All accountabilities must be performed in accordance with State and Department rules and policies, including risk management, safety and environmental standards, regulations and administrative orders.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High school diploma or high school equivalency credential. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.
Experience: Two years of experience as a Lift Bridge Worker, industrial crane or hoist operator, or in one of the following fields: construction, industrial/manufacturing, maritime, mechanical or heavy equipment/vehicle repair.
License/Certification: Must possess a valid driver’s license and/or access to transportation for statewide travel. The applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Candidates must complete the lift operation training program, pass the lift operation written test administered by the Department of Transportation, and pass a practical exam at the controls of the bridge(s) assigned within three (3) months of appointment to this position.
- Must receive a negative result on a pre-employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with the Department’s Policy on Safety Sensitive Positions. Participates in drug and alcohol testing program for safety sensitive positions at the Department of Transportation.
- Must have ability to climb and work from ladders or scaffolds and must be physically able to remove snow. Must be able to maintain and operate snow blowers.
- All accountabilities must be performed in accordance with State and Department rules and policies, including risk management, safety and environmental standards, regulations and administrative orders.
- Monitors river traffic for appropriate signals from vessels approaching the bridge, opens and closes the lift bridge, exercising established procedures to stop land traffic flow.
- Utilizes appropriate means of communication with river traffic, land traffic, emergency services, and supervisor.
- Maintains a written record reflecting the times of opening and closing of the bridge, name and description of vessels passing through, effects upon vehicular traffic and other lift bridge related information.
- Performs security inspections by security walks and through the operation and use of the closed circuit camera system.
- Makes minor repairs, performs routine maintenance such as oils and greases bridge components, and works on cables and related machinery.
- Supervises, trains and evaluates Lift Bridge Workers I and II.
- Maintains bridge lighting systems to insure effective work order. Removes snow and debris from lift span of bridge, sidewalks, catwalks and parking areas and salts or sands as required.
- Appraises bridge maintenance problems to a supervisor in such a way as to prevent potential loss of life, personal injury or property damage.
