The Multimodal Planning and Programs Bureau (MPPB) sits within the Planning Division at the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) and is responsible for developing the State Freight Plan, NMDOT Public Involvement Plan (PIP), the Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP), and various other plans.

Furthermore, the Bureau ensures compliance with federal and state planning regulations for Metropolitan Planning
Organizations (MPO) and, for the non-metropolitan consultation process, through working with Regional Transportation Planning Organizations (RTPO).

The Bureau oversees the Bicycle/Pedestrian/Equestrian (BPE) Program, Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), Recreational Trails Program (RTP), and Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), as well as projects previously funded through the Safe Routes to School and Scenic Byways programs.
Why does the job exist?

This is an Urban and Regional Planner III position in the Multimodal Planning and Programs Bureau. The position assists the State's Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Equestrian Coordinator and the rest of the Active Transportation Programs Team with planning and program coordination. Duties include program management of the Recreational Trails Program and Transportation Alternatives Program, multimodal transportation planning, providing technical assistance to Tribal and Local Public Agencies, coordinating with Metropolitan Planning Organizations and Regional Transportation Planning Organizations on transportation planning in New Mexico, and other duties as assigned.
How does it get done?

Key responsibilities of this position will include the administration of the Transportation Alternatives and Recreational Trails federal aid highway programs including managing calls for projects, reporting, project and program monitoring, processing reimbursements, and overseeing grant agreements. This position also must assess projects for feasibility, program eligibility, and compliance with state and federal processes and requirements.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in planning, architecture, business administration, public administration, or political science and two (2) years of experience to include urban transportation or infrastructure planning, real estate, commercial or public land usage, grant management, procurement, working with contracts, right of way appraisal, inter-agency coordination, engineering design, business administration, and/or economics. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed in an office setting. Some statewide travel with overnight stays may be required.
Must adhere to strict deadlines. Extensive use of personal computer.

Work is primarily performed on-site in Santa Fe in an office setting with exposure to a Visual/Video Display
Terminal and extensive personal computer and phone usage.

Occasional overnight travel is required within New Mexico as well as to conferences in other areas.
