Why does the job exist?
The Law Clerk position exists to provide legal support and assistance to the managing attorneys and staff attorneys of the Administrative Litigation Unit within the OSE Litigation and Adjudication Program. Job duties include research, preparation and filing of legal documents, maintaining legal databases and case files, and interfacing with the OSE Hearing Unit, and state and federal district courts and courts of appeals.
How does it get done?
This position will :
1. Provide research assistance and support to managing attorneys, staff attorneys, and contract attorneys in the ALU.
2. Conduct legal research as directed using on-line resources and other pertinent sources.
3. Prepare legal memoranda, reports, abstracts, briefings, and summaries based on research.
4. Maintain case files for use in administrative hearings and / or court hearings (ie, expert reports, motions, depositions, and
orders) and prepare summaries and indices as requested by attorneys. Attend meetings and field visits as necessary.

The State of New Mexico and the Office of the State Engineer.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have :
1. Experience conducting legal research
2. Experience drafting, editing, and filing legal pleadings
3. Experience preparing legal memoranda.
4. Experience maintaining and organizing files and calendars for multiple attorneys in a fast-paced legal environment.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Paralegal, Legal Science, Business, English, History, Communications, Psychology, and / or Sociology and two (2) years of relevant experience to include the preparation and review of legal documents and legal / policy research and analysis. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and / or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience or current enrollment with at least two (2) semesters in a Juris Doctorate program from an accredited school of law will substitute for required work experience.
Employment Requirements
This position will not drive a state vehicle.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual / Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. May travel to meetings with other OSE / ISC employees.
