Why does the job exist?
This position will be responsible for providing legal services to the New Mexico Corrections Department
(NMCD).
How does it get done?
The incumbent will provide legal advice to the NMCD and staff members on various matters including contract
issues, personnel matters, internal affairs, state, federal, and administrative employment defense, policy
review, and legislative analysis. Further legal representation includes agency IPRA responses and analysis,
advisement of institutions and parole/probation officers in various areas of the law including review of
Judgment and Sentences, and agency defense in pro-se inmate civil law cases as well as litigation
management and settlement negotiations. The position will assist as necessary with general attorney duties
such as contract review, subpoenas, policies and procedures. The Attorney Supervisor will devote a
substantial portion of time assigning and directly supervising employees.
Who are the customers?
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law and five (5) years of experience in the practice of law. Must be licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license (Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA). Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a Driver's License. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is
conditional pending results.
Statutory Requirement:
All Attorney classifications must be and remain licensed as an attorney, in good standing, by the Supreme Court of New Mexico, or licensed as an attorney and in good standing by the highest court of another state and eligible pursuant to the limited license provisions (See Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA).
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an environment which may include some contact with supervised inmates. May be
required to work odd hours, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
