This position is in the Office of Injury and Violence Prevention, which is housed in the Injury and Behavioral Health Epidemiology Bureau of the Department of Health. Currently in the OIVP there are programs to prevent community violence, gun violence, childhood injuries, sexual violence, suicide, and older adult falls. This office also manages two surveillance systems: the National Violent Death Reporting System and the New Mexico Child Fatality Review. The Office of Injury and Violence Prevention presently has over 20 positions, housed in three units: the epidemiology unit, the injury prevention unit, and the violence prevention unit.
Why does the job exist?
The purpose of the Childhood Injury Prevention Coordinator is to reduce the rates of childhood injuries and deaths in New Mexico. This job contributes to the agency through the implementation of evidence-based/informed childhood injury prevention programs, with an emphasis on interventions to prevent adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), promote safe sleep, motor vehicle safety, and promote protective factors in care of children, to name a few. The position will collaborate with community partners, state agencies and others to leverage data and resources to address social, environmental, and economic conditions that affect health equity and health outcomes. This position serves as a leader in childhood injury prevention initiatives.
How does it get done?
This job gets done through the development of close internal and external partnerships, and implementation of evidence-based/informed childhood injury prevention programs. Topics may include: safe sleep, motor vehicle safety, unintentional child fatalities, to name a few. Regular reporting on program activities for both internal as well as federal agencies. Facilitation of groups as well as presenting on topics related to childhood injury.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Guidance and Counseling, Education, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Criminology, and/or Family Studies/Services and four (4) years of any combination of experience including working with communities, working on health or social service related matters, social work/case management experience, behavioral health, and/or health care. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting: late hours and weekends work may be required. Will be exposed to regular periods of video display terminal and keyboard usage and stressful situations. Travel may be required. Incumbent will work under stress and frequent time constraints. Must have own mode of transportation. Incumbent may be required to furnish a personal vehicle for carrying out assignments.
