Why does the job exist?
New Mexico is in the grip of a gun violence crisis, one that demands immediate, intelligence-driven solutions. Firearms were the leading cause of death among children and teens (ages 1-17) from 2018 to 2022. Over the past decade, our gun death rate has surged by 76%, making New Mexico the third highest in the nation. Gun violence is highly concentrated, with less than 0.5% of the population responsible for up to 70% of gun-related homicides. Traditional enforcement alone is not enough, and this position is key to changing that.
As the CGIC Coordinator, you will drive a statewide initiative to combat firearm-related crimes, enhance investigations, and bring justice to communities affected by violence. This role is vital in strengthening investigative efforts, fostering interagency collaboration, and ensuring law enforcement has the resources needed to hold violent offenders accountable.
How does it get done?
By overseeing the implementation and expansion of the CGIC, you will ensure the seamless integration of NIBIN technology to rapidly process ballistic evidence, link crime scenes, and identify suspects. Additionally, you will coordinate training, compliance audits, and intelligence-sharing efforts, empowering law enforcement agencies, particularly those in rural and underserved areas, with the necessary tools to combat firearm-related crimes effectively.
A major aspect of this role is fostering interagency collaboration, ensuring smooth partnerships between NMDOJ, local and state law enforcement, and the ATF. You will oversee compliance with Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) and facilitate intelligence-sharing networks. Utilizing advanced analytics, you will help track and disrupt firearm trafficking networks and identify repeat offenders. Your contributions will directly lead to stronger prosecutions, improved case resolutions, and the development of policy innovations that enhance crime gun intelligence efforts.
Who are the customers?
