The Early Childhood Education and Care Department was established on July 1, 2020. The Department's aim is to create a more cohesive, equitable, and effective early childhood system in New Mexico. That means coordinating a continuum of programs from prenatal to five and ensuring that families in every corner of the state can access the services they need.

Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this Registered Nurse III role is to support the Early Childhood Education and Care Department (ECECD) vision : A culture where all New Mexican families and young children are thriving. This is done through a home visiting model that focuses on the immediate postpartum period. The Home Visiting Nurse conducts home visits with families with newborns in their assigned area.
How does it get done?
The Family Connects Home Visiting Nurse will support new parents in caring for their newborns by conducting physical assessments, addressing questions, and identifying needs. They will work with a team to schedule initial home visits within two to twelve weeks postpartum, ideally targeting the third week. The nurse will assess family needs across 12 domains of physical and psychosocial well-being, facilitate referrals to community agencies, and help create a support plan. The role includes maintaining detailed records, conducting health assessments, and establishing trusting relationships with families. The nurse will collaborate with community resources, assist with appointments, and support the development of parenting skills. They will conduct at least six home visits per week, attend team meetings, and support the Family Connects program.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this position must possess and maintain a current New Mexico Registered Nursing license or be eligible for licensure in accordance with the Nursing Practice Act (61-3-2 through 61-3-31 NMSA 1978) and 16-1-1 through 61-12-20 NMAC, as applicable. Preferred skills include proficiency in the Spanish language, clinical experience related to domestic violence, substance abuse, and / or depression, experience in child / maternal health, social work, or other related fields, and certification as a Lactation Educator or Consultant. The candidate must have the ability to work in a team with clinical and non-clinical staff, work with a nurse supervisor to implement practice improvement and clinical development plans, and be available to work on weekends as required. Proficiency and comfort in using laptops for in-home assessment and intervention, along with maintaining current CPR certification, are also essential requirements.
Minimum Qualification
Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico, or eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements, or eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and three (3) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Defensive Driving Certification must be obtained within the first month of hire
Working Conditions
Services are provided primarily provided in the family home, but can also include clinics, auxiliary and community sites. Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual / Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage with extended periods of office noise, bending, standing and lifting. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Services are provided in a clinic with diverse racial and ethnic populations, many who do not speak the English language. Occasional work outside of normal work schedule to attend training and community initiatives. Travel required.
