The Department of Public Safety Human Resources Bureau is comprised of Classification and Compensation, Recruitment, Leave Management, and Training. This bureau is dedicated to providing efficient and responsive customer service to our employees, including both civilian staff and officers, as well as the public. The Leave Management division ensures compliance with state and federal leave policies, assists employees with leave requests, and provides guidance on FMLA, military leave, and other leave related matters.
Why does the job exist?

This is the senior-level position within the Human Resources Generalist classification series, providing advanced personnel support to assigned Divisions and/or Bureaus across various-sized agencies. This role plays a critical part in assisting other HR generalists and ensuring the effective implementation of HR functions. Key responsibilities include managing leave processes, administering benefits, ensuring compliance with policies and government regulations, and overseeing legal compliance related to HR matters. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of leave management, benefits administration, and the application of HR policies and procedures.
How does it get done?

The Human Resources Generalist III provides personnel assistance to assigned Division(s) and/or Bureau(s). This position will apply a full range of specialized skills and job knowledge to support HR functions. The key responsibilities will include the following:

  • Process all workers compensation and disability requests.
  • Processes Family Medical Leave and other specialized leave requests.
  • Provides advanced level personnel assistance to assigned Division(s) and/or Bureau(s).
  • Applies full range of specialized skills and job knowledge to support HR functions.
  • May develop policies and procedures: research, develop, refine, and enhance policies for department utilization.
  • Regularly works on tasks that are varied and complex.
  • Responsible for anticipating and analyzing the impact and consequences of decisions made.
  • Independently performs all activities with considerable latitude.

This position supports the Program Support Division, Statewide Law Enforcement Division, New Mexico State Police (NMSP), Office of the Secretary, Office of Legal Affairs, Administrative Services Division, Information Technology, Law Enforcement Academy, Forensic Laboratory, the Law Enforcement Records Bureau and the State of New Mexico.
Ideal Candidate

This position supports the Program Support Division, Statewide Law Enforcement Division, New Mexico State Police (NMSP), Office of the Secretary, Office of Legal Affairs, Administrative Services Division, Information Technology, Law Enforcement Academy, Forensic Laboratory, the Law Enforcement Records Bureau and the State of New Mexico.
Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in any field and one (1) year of experience in human resource operations; recruitment, selection, payroll, compensation and benefits administration, labor relations, investigations, HR related training experience, and/or occupational analysis. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements

Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprinting in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations; and is conditional pending results. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy.

In addition, the selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a current Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico; or pass and receive the Defensive Driving Certificate within six (6) months of date of hire.

The selected candidate will work with highly confidential and high-volume data flow must have the ability to complete assignments with a high level of accuracy within strict time constraints as well as, handle multiple tasks and request from several people at once.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in a fast-paced Law Enforcement office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage with extended periods of sitting and a high volume of data flow. Exposure to confidential information. Exposure of officers carrying weapons. Occasional overtime is required to meet statutory and critical deadlines. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Must be able to lift 25lbs. Occasional local and in-state travel may be required.
