The New Mexico Department of Transportation, Traffic Safety Division exists under state statute to organize, plan, and conduct a statewide program of activities designed to prevent crashes and to reduce the incidence of DWI.
The Division also partners with a variety of local and state partners to meet safety goals established in the Highway Safety Act of 1966. This act created the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as one of our main partners.
The Traffic Safety Division receives federal and state funding and develops a Highway Safety Plan and sets performance goals to reduce crashes and injuries.
The Traffic Records Section of the Traffic Safety Division is responsible for the NM Traffic Records System and the State Crash Data System, and works with local, state, and federal partners to improve crash data in New Mexico.
Why does the job exist?
This position exists to report fatal crash statistics into the federal data system. Data is utilized nationwide for a myriad of purposes. The Department utilizes traffic safety data to conduct problem identification and identify safety countermeasures to address public safety areas of concern on New Mexico roadways.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) maintains a cooperative agreement with agencies in every state to provide specific information in a standard format for fatal crashes, including New Mexico. The position serves as a Fatal Analysis and Reporting System (FARS) Analyst who enters coded data into NHTSA¿s central FARS database daily. The data is automatically checked for acceptable range values, consistency, and then reviewed by NHTSA for acceptance.
How does it get done?
The position helps advance the Department's data quality, data sharing, reporting goals and supports the main FARS analyst by doing the following :
- Enters initial crash information into the State Fatal Log and Federal Early Notification Reporting System.
- Compiles necessary case information from diverse data sources, including medical examiner reports, death certificates, emergency service reports, police crash reports, state records, roadway data,
news outlets, and other relevant sources.
The incumbent will be required to undergo formal training and certification from NHTSA via the National Institute of Safety Research, including webinars, new analyst training, and annual system-wide training, which may include in and out-of-state travel.

NHTSA (National Highway Safety Administration), National Institute of Safety Research (NISR), FHWA (Federal Highway Association), law enforcement agencies, State of New Mexico government agencies, grantees, sub-grantees, contractors, and miscellaneous suppliers.

The ideal candidate will have preferred experience / education in the following areas :

Working independently with minimal supervision.
Problem solving and applying analytical skills effectively.
Minimum Qualification
Associate degree and two (2) years of experience in the procedures of business and management principles involved in strategic planning. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and / or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual / Video Display Terminal (VDT), extensive personal computer and phone usage.
